PFT: Bears list Forte as questionable for Monday

Browns wide receiver Greg Little cannot hang onto a pass as Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb breaks up the pass in the fourth quarter during their NFL game in BaltimoreReuters

The Browns aren?t happy about the failure of receiver Greg Little to catch the football.? But the reality is that, unless and until they have a better option, they?ve got no choice but to work with him.

And so they will.

?We had some drops,? coach Pat Shurmur said after Thursday night?s loss to the Ravens, which included seven drops by the Browns receivers, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.? ?Not acceptable.? There?s zero tolerance for that.? I will say this: We have some tough guys out there playing that are not catching the ball efficiently enough, and we just need to keep working with them.? That?s the reality of it.?

Of course, that?s not what ?zero tolerance? means.

But with zero options, zero tolerance can?t be applied as defined.? And so, despite the tough talk, the Browns will have to try to help Little finish the job.

?Great receivers make great catches,? Little said, adding that quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple told Little after dropping a potential touchdown catch that the second-year receiver would still ?get a chance to pull out your big driver.?

Again, that?s not zero tolerance.? It?s arguably the exact opposite of it.

Either way, the Browns need the exact opposite of what they have been getting from Little.

United States Navy Names Ship After Neil Armstrong

Yea, shit like this is why I occasionally pray for a military coup d'?tat - hey, it's not like they could do any worse than the pirate ringmasters who currently run this freakshow, right?

Except that those who might conceivably commit a coup are NOT the ones you'd want running things. There are a lot of great people in our military, but there are some really scary people too (I'm specifically thinking of the far right "Christians" like Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley), and the good people would not be the ones to get involved in a coup. Be careful what you wish for.

The problem with your theory is that some of those "scary people" you mention support the current system and regime, and thus would probably not want it to fall, as that would be detrimental to their own agendas.

That's the thing about rhetorical hypotheticals - you can't honestly say, "it will go down this way," because there's no way of knowing for sure unless said event actually occurs. While your scenario holds merit, it's equally meritorious to believe that some rather non-scary people would lead the

(AP) ? No one is complaining that the refs cost the Cleveland Browns the game. That mere fact is a major victory for the NFL and the seven-man crew led by referee Gene Steratore, who brought official harmony back to the nation's most popular league.

Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game Thursday night as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

Sure, there were calls that made both sides unhappy. Browns coach Pat Shurmur drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing an intentional grounding call, and Ravens left tackle Michael Oher could be heard raising all kinds of beef about a holding call.

But, overall, the officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace ? not to mention the inconsistent calls ? that had marred the three weeks of games with replacement officials.

"It was great to have those guys back," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "It looked like they knew what they were doing."

An agreement to end the lockout was reached late Wednesday after marathon negotiations, two days after a "Monday Night Football" finish brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide.

That game ended when a 24-yard desperation pass on the last play was ruled a touchdown ? even though replays appeared to show it should have been an interception ? giving the Seattle Seahawks a disputed 14-12 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The stage was set for something eerily similar Thursday. A fourth-down unnecessary roughness penalty on Baltimore's Paul Kruger ? a good call, given the way he shoved Cleveland's Joe Thomas after the whistle ? gave the Browns one final play from the 18-yard line.

But Brandon Weeden's 18-yard pass sailed high as time expired. No controversial ending this time.

"I thought they handled (the game) great," Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur said. "I had all the confidence in the world that this was going to be officiated in the right way."

The newfound love for the refs was evident all evening.

About an hour before kickoff, they made their first appearance on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.

Later, when the crew returned, they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"

"It was very chaotic with the replacement refs," said Karen Riley, a 44-year-old fan wearing a Rice jersey. "They couldn't control the players on either side. There were bad calls, constantly, and in some cases refs making different calls at the same time."

When Steratore then turned on his microphone to greet the captains for the pre-game coin toss, the crowd heard him say: "Good evening, men. It's good to be back."

The stadium erupted in a roar.

"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."

The deal to end the lockout is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.

So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.

"We've had a few weeks to actually realize that this was the first September that I was home for multiple Saturdays and Sundays for almost 30 years of my life, continuously. ... It just feels completely different," Steratore said. "To be away from something that is involved with this level of professional sport, just to come back and feel that again, it doesn't take long to realize why you were missing it as much as you were missing it."

Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time his crew made a questionable call ? just like always.

"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."

Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full chorus of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman tossed his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.

Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.

The crew made it clear it wouldn't tolerate the extra shoving and yelling after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return in the first quarter.

Then there was Shurmur's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Replays appeared to validate the grounding call he was trying to contest, and the coach took responsibility for his loss of temper.

"I can't do that," Shurmur said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

There were 18 penalties called in the game, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There were two rare ? and indisputable ? whistles for fair catch interference on punt returns, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Kelechi Osemele was so obvious that it drew three flags.

The league's new agreement with the officials runs for eight years. Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged the ending of the Seahawks-Packers game "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.

"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."

The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."

"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

Anti-Bacterial Soaps: No Benefits and Unnecessary Risks | NC BEA ...

Have you noticed that antibacterial soaps are everywhere and even found in many toothpastes if you read the fine print (this gives a whole new meaning to wash your mouth out with soap).? Most people do not realize that bacteria are EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING.? Are you one of those people that washes there hands incessently, and are afraid everytime someone sneezes in your presence? Are you affraid of touching things in public places out of fear of infection? This fits the definition of a germaphobe. There is little to NO proof that antibacterial soaps you buy at the drugstore actually kill the dangerous microbes like S. Aureus or E. Coli.? Many experts say trying to live in disinfected sanitized bubble is bad for your health.? They believe that too much sanitization will weaken your immune system and in turn create dangerous superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics!? In addition a study done at UC Davis found that antibacterial CHEMICALS can alter hormonal activity in rats and human cells and in addition these antibacterial chemicals go down the drain into our waterways damaging wildlife, and then end up in our drinking water posing yet another health risk.? Is this worth it?? Even warnings from scientists have gone unheard in the antibacterial market place.? The most commonly used antimicrobial agent is TRICLOSAN. The antimicrobial industry has grown to a 1 billion dollar a year business. From the?FDA (food and drug administration) and also the AMA (American medical association) they state that antimicrobial soaps are no more effective at preventing infections than plain old regular soap.? So the promise of antibacterial soaps is a failed promise and we flush those chemicals down the drain into our water supply causing environmental problems.? Is this worth it? A study using store bought antibacterial soap and a standard strain of E. Coli found it took 2 hours of being in contact with the toxic soap before the bacteria was killed.? I don?t know about you but I sure don?t spend 2 hours washing my hands.? In fact the average person spend 5-10 seconds washing there hands.? So if antimicrobial soaps are no better than just plain old regular soap at preventing infection then why use them? Grayson Blom, B.Sc., D.C. Upper Cervical Chiropractic Specialist5975 Overland? Feeling Down? Spirituality Can Boost Your Mood

In 2008, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama got himself into trouble by saying "bitter" voters "cling to guns or religion" in response to hard times. Obama later apologized and recanted the statement, but new research suggests he may not have been entirely wrong.

People do turn to spirituality after a bad day, according to a study published online Aug. 1 in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. And good news for spiritual folks, it works.

"We find that having a really spiritual day, committing to a power higher than yourself, carefully considering a purpose larger than yourself, it ends up leading to a lot of well-being," said study researcher Todd Kashdan, a psychologist at George Mason University in Virginia. "We find profound levels of meaning in life, greater positive emotions, less negative emotions, higher self-esteem."

Spirituality and happiness

A number of studies have found links between spirituality and happiness. A sense of spirituality, defined as the search for the sacred to differentiate it from organized religion, has even been linked to young women having more sex, perhaps because they feel a greater sense of interconnectedness and intimacy with others.

But most researchers have looked at the link between spirituality in a broad sense, with surveys that ask people about their spirituality in general. Kashdan and his colleagues wanted a day-to-day view. So they asked 87 college students to fill out daily online diaries about their emotions, their spiritual feelings and their self-esteem. They then looked at how spirituality matched up with daily emotional ups and downs.

The participants were a mix of religions, with 34 percent identifying as Catholic, 18 percent as Protestants, and the rest a mix of atheists, Buddhists, Eastern Orthodox, Mormons, Muslims and other faiths.

The diary analysis first found that daily spirituality is associated with a boost in self-esteem and positive mood. The reason, Kashdan told LiveScience, seems to be that spirituality gives people a sense of meaning in life. People's life meaning statistically explained 100 percent of spirituality's positive effect on mood, and 93 percent of the self-esteem boost. [8 Ways Religion Impacts your Life]

Sad today, spiritual tomorrow

For people who are high in spirituality, a bad day was linked to an increase in spiritual behavior, such as meditation or prayer, the next. A good day was associated with fewer spiritual behaviors.

"If today you're in a funk ? tomorrow you're much more likely to be spiritually inclined, to engage in spiritual practices and double down on your focus on things that transcend humanity," Kashdan said.

In turn, a spiritual day today led to a happier tomorrow, with people reporting greater meaning in life the day after they'd engaged in spiritual practices.

The same was not true for non-spiritual people, who became even less likely to engage in spiritual practices after a bad day.

The findings highlight how "clinging" to religion shouldn't necessarily be seen in a negative light, Kashdan said.

"Happiness is fleeting, but profound meaning is something like a stable architecture you can work with," Kashdan said. "If I know I have this profound meaning, it sticks with me despite bad things happening."

(AP Photo/Alexander F. Yuan, File)

(AP) ? China's communist leadership expelled Bo Xilai from the ruling party Friday and sought to bury him with charges ranging from corruption to sexual affairs, aiming to sweep away their most damaging scandal in decades while finally scheduling their long-awaited leadership transition for November.

A statement from the party's Politburo amounted to a surprisingly strong and wide-ranging indictment against Bo, effectively ending the public of life of the flamboyant 63-year-old populist who was one of China's best known politicians and whose ambition was considered a menace to the country's top leaders.

The former Politburo member and regional party chief is to be charged with crimes dating back more than a decade, including abuse of power, bribe taking and improper relations with several women ? banned by the party because they are considered an inducement to corruption. He also is accused of involvement in the cover-up of his wife's murder of a British businessman, which was instrumental in triggering his downfall.

"They want to drive a stake through the heart of his political career, and make it absolutely impossible, not only for him to reappear but for anyone else who has that idea of trying to create that sort of personalized, political, charismatic leadership in some part of China which may challenge the leadership," Rana Mitter, professor of Chinese history and politics at Oxford University.

The Politburo also announced the party congress would take place Nov. 8.

Dates for the congress, held once every five years, were overdue and highly anticipated because it will see President Hu Jintao step down after 10 years as party boss ? and China's ultimate leader ? to be replaced by Vice President Xi Jinping.

The congress had been expected to take place in mid-October, although the preparations were overshadowed by the Bo scandal.

"Bo Xilai's behavior resulted in serious repercussions and enormous damage to the reputation of the party and the nation, producing extremely vile effects domestically and overseas, and causing heavy damage to the cause of the party and the people," the Politburo said in a statement issued following its meeting in Beijing.

Speculation swirled for months over whether the party would harshly punish one of its own for criminal wrongdoing, or merely allow its own disciplinary arm to deal him a slap on the wrist.

The scandal was set off when a trusted Bo aide disclosed that his boss's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was sacked as party chief of the city of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The trials of Wang, which wrapped up this week, and Gu, which finished earlier, cleared the way for the party to decide whether to charge Bo with criminal wrongdoing. But his ouster from the leadership early this year opened a window into the divisive jostling for power as president and party leader Hu prepares to retire to make way for younger leaders.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed to prosecutors since Hu had Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu sentenced for corruption in 2007. In that case, more than a year passed before Chen stood trial, perhaps auguring a long wait before Bo's case goes to court.

High-level purges, however, are almost always more about political power plays than crimes.

Bo was a divisive figure among Chinese leaders. Self-assured and comfortable with the media, he promoted populist policies as party chief of Chongqing and rode high-profile campaigns to bust organized crime gangs and promote communist culture to national popularity. His ambition was seen as a threat not only by Hu but to Hu's soon-to-be-installed successor, Xi Jinping.

Bo's supporters called the Politburo decision a political tactic. "I have doubts on any criminal wrongdoings of Bo Xilai. I need to see the evidence," said Han Deqiang, an economics professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a leading voice in what Chinese call the new left. "I think this is a political battle turned into a criminal one."

Bo's detractors, however, were cheered by the news, though they too saw politics at play in the decision.

"This announcement is long overdue. This means there is some progress in the rule of law in China. There is more transparency," said Li Zhuang, a formidable defense lawyer who found himself jailed in Chongqing after he accused police of extracting his client's confession by torture. "Of course it is also political. In China, politics and law often go hand in hand."

The decision by the 25-member Politburo, of which Bo had been a member, said that "investigations show that Bo had seriously violated party discipline ... abused his power, committed grave mistakes and should be held responsible for the Wang Lijun case as well as Gu's murder case."

The mention of Gu's case appeared to be a reference to obstruction of justice. Wang testified that Bo ignored him when he told him of his suspicions, then boxed him in the ears, demoted him, and detained several of his subordinates.

It was the first direct mention of Bo in state media in months. His name was not mentioned for both Gu's and Wang's trials.

The Politburo statement said that he took huge amounts of bribes directly or through his family and "maintained illicit relationships with numerous females." It said Bo's crimes dated from his time as mayor of the eastern port city of Dalian, through his term as commerce minister and as leader of Chongqing.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known.

"Now Bo is finished, Xi can take over those supporters from Bo and enlarge his network among the princelings," said China politics analyst Willy Lam of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Yet his ouster will do nothing to win over Bo supporters among party hardliners and admirers of Bo, who was widely popular among working-class Chinese.

"Xi is safer with Bo gone, but the hardliners will withhold their cooperation at the congress as a sign of their disapproval," said China expert Feng Chongyi of the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

Friday's Politburo meeting sets a series of events in motion. The 204-member Central Committee, a cross-section of the national party elite, usually convenes about a week before the congress to approve decisions already made by the Politburo. Privately, the committee will also approve the incoming leaders and a policy blueprint for the next five years.

The Center for the Arts offers entertainment here on ... - The Graphic

Courtesy of Dala

While college is an exciting time for students, some are bombarded with homework and other tasks that keep them from exploring the other opportunities that campus life has to offer.

As college students, it is necessary to ?let off some steam? from the grueling confines of the library, to be entertained by someone other than a teacher, to live out our college experience so that when we look back years from now we can say, ?College was the best time of my life!?

But there?s so much work.

Well, what if Pepperdine made it easy for students to achieve all of these things without even leaving campus and at an affordable price? This is where the Center for the Arts comes to the rescue of over-worked, over-hiked and over Caf food (OK, maybe not that far) Pepperdine students everywhere.

Each year, the Center for the Arts invites acclaimed entertainment acts, musicians, and theatrical troupes from all over the country to perform on campus for students and the surrounding community. This provides a ?great opportunity for students to try something new,? Rebecca Carson, the Center?s managing director said.

Plena Libre

Sept. 30, 2012

Plena Libre helps students explore the fun, upbeat rhythms of Puerto Rican music with a trifecta of five vocalists, master drummers and horns.

The Grammy-nominated group provides a lively, energetic show requiring audience involvement and has performed all over the world, including the Morocco?s Fez Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival. They even do half of their show in Spanish, which is perfect for those students missing a certain International Program.

Dala

Oct. 7, 2012

Dala adds an acoustic/folk genre with a smidge of pop into the mix of musical line-ups for this coming year. Formed in 2002 by two best friends from high school, Dala?s unique earth tones and upbeat tempo have earned them recognition and various awards, including the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, the 2010 Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Folk Artist, a nomination by the National Public Radio in the U.S. as one of the Top 10 folk songs of 2009, as well as many other recognitions herein the U.S. and Canada. If you like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot, Dala is definitely something you might want to consider.

Whose Live Anyway?

The guys from ?Who?s Line is it Anyway?? are back in this hilarious stand-up comedy event on Oct. 19!

This isn?t their first time on the Pepperdine campus however, as they have performed the past few years for students. Whose Live Anyway is always a sell-out here at Pepperdine, so be sure to get your tickets fast. As always, tickets are just $10 for students.

?Oklahoma!?

Nov. 8-11 and 15-17, 2012

The Center for the Arts did not have to look far for this show; it is done entirely by Pepperdine students. Debuting on Broadway in 1943, ?Oklahoma!? tells the story of a cowboy who falls in love with a farm girl through lighthearted musical numbers and dances.

These performances are just a taste of what is to come from The Center for the Arts this upcoming year. The Center for the Arts works hard to find performers appealing to the entire student body, so if these don?t excite your theatrical taste buds, there are about thirty other performances that can be found at their website, arts.pepperdine.edu/performances/.

Don?t worry about that pile of homework sitting on the desk or that stack of laundry that needs to be done. It?ll all still be there tomorrow, but tickets to some of these amazing shows might not be, so hurry and get yours before they are sold out.

Medical Electronics Built To Last Only A Little While

Circuits like this one could be useful in implantable medical devices.

If these medical implants dissolve in the body, they could eliminate the need for surgery to retrieve them.

The circuits are made of silicon, magnesium and a special kind of silk, all of which can be designed to dissolve after a fixed period of time.

The Beckman Institute, University of Illinois

Most engineers build things to last.

But a group of mechanical and electrical engineers are working on electronics that will break down in as little as a couple of days. On purpose!

The electronic circuits they're developing don't crash. It's more dramatic than that. They dissolve in liquid.

Sounds a little bit crazy, but circuits that work for a while then disappear could be pretty useful in medical devices implanted in the human body.

In a paper published in the journal Science, the engineers describe how they used silicon, magnesium and a special type of reconstituted silk to create a microchip that can last for as long as needed, then fade away when its job is done.

?

"It will have a finite lifetime while in a wet environment," says Fiorenzo Omenetto, an electrical engineer at Tufts University who co-authored the article.

Right now, some medical implants have to be surgically removed when they've overstayed their welcome inside the body. But if these devices could instead dissolve and get flushed out through the body's natural processes, surgery could be avoided.

That's one of the potential benefits for dissolvable electronics, but definitely not the only one.

Omenetto says they says might also be used to create more environmentally friendly consumer devices, like iPhones or televisions. "Electronic waste is not a pretty waste," Omenetto tells Shots. "Anything that could be done to use more benign materials [in electronics] could help."

At this point, you might be wondering how these electronic devices could possibly function while submerged liquid and not experience catastrophic short circuiting.

It all boils down to silk.

Omenetto and his colleague at Tufts, David Kaplan, have been experimenting with silk for years and have used it to develop a biodegradable plastic-like material. The silk-based material can be programmed to dissolve over a predetermined time period ? six hours, six days, six months, you name it.

Omenetto teamed up with mechanical engineer John Rogers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to design a magnesium and silicon circuit encased in this silk-based material. "The silk is water-soluble, but its dissolution rate can be controlled," Rogers says. "We used that as a protecting layer to go on top of our water-soluble electronics."

Once the electronics no longer need to be protected, the silk starts dissolving and then the circuit goes along with it. "Everything dissolves," Rogers says.

Don't expect to see dissolvable electronics in the doctor's office anytime soon. Omenetto estimates it could be a decade before they're in widespread use. Not only would these devices need to be tested and pass muster with the Food and Drug Administration, but Omenetto says someone would also need to figure out how to mass produce these circuits in a factory.

"People can make very nice electronic gadgets in a lab," he says, "but that's a long way from Intel."

Today's Science article has people in the engineering world buzzing. "This is a small but growing field for sure," says Christopher Bettinger, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. The key to taking this technology out of the lab and into the marketplace will be "identifying an application first ? a disease or a treatment that can benefit from this," he says. "There are definitely applications that could benefit from this."

Robot Snakes To Fight Cancer Via Natural Orifice Surgery

Compared to skin (heals rapidly, and can be kept clean while healing with modern methods), puncturing the alimentary canal (mouth to anus) is REALLY stupid. Bathed in dangerous chemicals, hostile bacteria (when not confined to their natural environment), and requiring tricky nutrition for the patient while healing), that is no place to be poking holes into the interior of the body (remember, topologically, it's the same as the outside).

"Help! I'm Codependent In My Relationships"
How do I stop this cycle of codependency?

I need advice on two different parts of this: the overall codependency issue and one specific guy.

I really need advice on two different parts of this: the overall codependency issue and one specific guy.

When I'm not in a relationship with anyone, I feel OK. I spend more time with my friends, I go out, I keep active, but I do generally enjoy being in a relationship more than not being in one. This doesn't mean I actively look for relationships, but when I do have one it kind of takes over me.

China carrier a show of force as Japan tension festers

TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - China sent its first aircraft carrier into formal service on Tuesday amid a tense maritime dispute with Japan in a show of force that could worry its neighbors.

China's Ministry of Defense said the newly named Liaoning aircraft carrier would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests".

In fact, the aircraft carrier, refitted from a ship bought from Ukraine, will have a limited role, mostly for training and testing ahead of the possible launch of China's first domestically built carriers after 2015, analysts say.

China cast the formal handing over of the carrier to its navy -- attended by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao -- as a triumphant show of national strength at a time of tensions with Japan over islands claimed by both sides.

"The smooth commissioning of the first aircraft carrier has important and profound meaning for modernizing our navy and for enhancing national defensive power and the country's overall strength," Xinhua news agency cited Wen as saying at the commissioning ceremony in the northern port of Dalian.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply this month after Japan bought the East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner, sparking anti-Japan protests across China.

"China will never tolerate any bilateral actions by Japan that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty," Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun told his Japanese counterpart on Tuesday as the two met in a bid to ease tensions.

"Japan must banish illusions, undertake searching reflection and use concrete actions to amend its errors, returning to the consensus and understandings reached between our two countries' leaders."

In a sign of the tensions, China has postponed a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties with Japan. But an official at the Japan-China Economic Association said Toyota Motor Corp Chairman Fujio Cho and Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of Japanese business lobby Keidanren, and other representatives of Japan-China friendship groups would attend an event on Thursday in Beijing.

The risks of military confrontation are scant, but political tensions between Asia's two biggest economies could fester and worries persist about an unintended incident at sea.

"If blood is shed, people would become irrational," Koichi Kato, an opposition lawmaker who heads the Japan-China Friendship Association and will travel to Beijing, told Reuters.

"NOT CUTTING EDGE"

For the Chinese navy, the addition of carriers has been a priority as it builds a force capable of deploying far from the Chinese mainland.

China this month warned the United States, with President Barack Obama's "pivot" to Asia, not to get involved in separate territorial disputes in the South China Sea between China and U.S. allies such as the Philippines.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in turn urged China and its Southeast Asian neighbors to resolve disputes "without coercion, without intimidation, without threats and certainly without the use of force".

Narushige Michishita, a security expert at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, said he thought the timing of the launch was unrelated to the islands dispute.

Rather, experts said it might be associated with China's efforts to build up patriotic unity ahead of a Communist Party congress that will install a new generation of top leaders as early as next month.

"China is taking another step to boost its strategic naval capability," Michishita said. "If they come to have an operational aircraft carrier, for the time being we are not super-concerned about the direct implications for the military balance between the U.S. and Japan on the one hand, and China on the other. This is still not cutting edge."

The East China Sea tensions with Japan were complicated on Tuesday by the entry of Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing calls an illegitimate breakaway, which also lays claim to the islands.

Japanese Coast Guard vessels fired water cannon to turn away about 40 Taiwan fishing boats and 12 Taiwan Coast Guard vessels. Six Chinese patrol ships were also near the islands but four left, leaving two nearby but not in waters Japan considers its own.

Japan protested to Taiwan, a day after lodging a complaint with China over what it called a similar intrusion by Chinese vessels.

Taiwan has friendly ties with Japan, but the two sides have long squabbled over fishing rights in the area. China and Taiwan both argue they have inherited China's historic sovereignty over the islands.

The flare-up in tension comes at a time when both China and Japan confront domestic political pressures. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government faces an election in months, adding pressure on him not to look weak on China. China's Communist Party is preoccupied with the leadership turnover, with President Hu Jintao due to step down.

Need Internet Marketing Help? Try These Tips | Christopher ...

Internet marketing can help your business. The Internet provides a broad field for reaching new customers. Many of these methods are extremely inexpensive and effective. Use the advice in this article to jump into Internet marketing, and achieve new levels of business success.

You should ensure that the ordering system you use is safe. Services such as Paypal allow you to use a payment system on your site that offers safe monetary transactions. Users should also create accounts that are password protected before they send personal or payment information to your website.

TIP! Giving customers incentives will help them to place orders quickly. This includes things like faster or free shipping, complimentary gift wrap and gift card enclosures.

Take the time to learn the basic rules of web page layout and design. There?s plenty of information online about CSS or HTML that will help you in web design. Take 30 minutes out of the day to work on your site and you will gain knowledge.

Provide customers with a time-sensitive incentive to place an order. For example, you could offer complimentary gift wrapping or free shipping for the first 100 customers who place an order. Special offers and incentives should have a definite end date.

Businesses are less personal nowadays due to the internet; it is almost like buying a product from an anonymous person. Businesses that rely on creating a personal connection with their customers will find this tool incredibly effective.

TIP! Try asking for feedback from customers who don?t buy anything. Ask them what you can do to get their business.

It is important to find the correct niche when you are marketing an Internet business. You will have a difficult time selling something to someone that shows absolutely no interest in what you are offering. Even if you do make a few sales, this approach is not likely to generate the levels of profit and business that you desire. So market accordingly unless you?re a baseball card and old Star Wars toy retailer; then by all means go for it!

One tip webmasters forget is to keep their sites simple. Tools like Microsoft Silverlight or Adobe Flash tend to be favored by website owners; therefore, professional website designers offer these services a lot. Wise webmasters remember that using specific technologies renders their websites useless to some prospects. A site should be able to function well, without needing all the fancy technology.

Expect to have to pay for a high-quality domain name. But, the probabilities of getting the domain name identical to that of your company is slim. You can get any domain name you want if you have over a thousand dollars to spend. You should definitely weigh the pros and cons of this investment.

TIP! An important way to design subsequent online marketing campaigns is to monitor and measure feedback relating to promotional programs, or concepts you have launched in the past. Gather feedback on an event or special promotion by keeping a close eye on comments left on message boards, forums and blogs related to your business?s niche.

A volume discount for customers who buy a lot from you can be a powerful tool to add to your Internet marketing campaign. Give them 10 % off an order when they spend more than $200, for example. People will spend more if they know they can get discounts.

Offer free gifts to your customers when they buy something; this will let them know that their business is appreciated. Going the extra mile and making your customers feel special after they just purchased something from you will likely have them coming back again, and in turn they might just tell someone else how happy they are with your business.

Try keep your website as clear cut and easy to use as possible. Your primary concern should be to provide your visitors with detailed and instructive content about the product or service they want to purchase. Repetitive descriptions and data, facts and information that the customer will find irrelevant or even boring, should be avoided.

TIP! It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a consultant for your marketing business as there are many resources available online to help you decide on your marketing approach. There are online communities, blogs, e-books, and seminars available to help you out.

As has been revealed earlier, internet marketing is an amazing way to reach out to customers and to bring attention to your business and products. The opportunities are endless and the benefits are immense. By utilizing the information in the article, you can build your customer base and bring new recognition to your company.
