JoJo's Bizarre Adventure RP?

So yeah, I've been really itching to do a JJBA RP for a while now. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is... well, just as what the title says - the strange adventures of a person whose name can be abbreviated to JoJo. The series is divided into a total of 8 story arcs each with its own protagonist and setting. Perhaps the most interesting element of JJBA are the Stand Powers that the characters wield.

Image

Stands are similar to Personas from the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series or the Oversoul from Shaman King. Stands are a reflection of a person's psyche which manifests itself as a humanoid entity which "stands" beside the user and grants them supernatural (and most of the time, bizarre) powers. While some stands have straightforward abilities such as pyrokinesis, super strength, and blinding speed other stand abilities are more tricky and require ingenuity to utilize. Examples of these are the ability to unravel your body into string, ability to turn people into magnets, ability to increase the weight of an object, and many more.

As for the RP, I'm still in the process of working out the details but I'd say I'm about 80% complete. The setting would be in Ancient Japan (I'm still debating though if I'm gonna go with the Bakumatsu period or the Meiji period). The JoJo for this RP would be a westerner in liege with Commodore Matthew Perry in his expedition and attempt to open Japan to the rest of the world.

Interested? Shoot me a PM or post in this Interest Check topic and let me know. Also, if anyone is interested on becoming a co-GM or want to help in making the RP, I would really appreciate that~!

The advantages of starting a web business are obvious: being able to work from home, rising your income to the extent that you desire, creating a dependable source of income, which operates on its own and permits you to stop working. But, there are specific ways to just take when you start with any internet business. Usually it may take you more time, before you start seeing any benefits. If you are likely to take up a web based business, then here are three simple ideas, which could significantly speed the right path to success.1. Choose a functional internet business model ? You will find different options to choose from: internet affiliate marketing, selling eBooks, providing a web hosting merchant assistance, giving freelance solutions like writing and submitting articles or selling pictures, blogging, creating an account site that provides training on a regular charge. The record goes on.Many people start with affiliate marketing online, since it is just a simple, yet effective web based company idea, which requires no prior knowledge to get started with. You start marketing services and goods of other online businesses. When you create a purchase, you get paid a percentage. The marketing skills that you study will assist you with any online business in the future.2. Join a program ? Once a working business model is chosen by you, try to find an on line training program, that will give you the required knowledge. You will find free mentorship plans, which require only your name and current email address. They explain to you how exactly to monetize your web based organization in the best way. Knowing exactly which measures to simply take, it is possible to target on revenue producing activities, making sure your time and effort is spent in the right way.3. Just take everyday motion ? some time is taken by It and work to construct a web business. Take action on an everyday basis, regardless of how small steps, to offer an opportunity to yourself to succeed. Figure out how to encourage your self, since this is really a new process for you. As you start out, it may often look as an impossible task. But if you have a business model, and if you know exactly which steps to get, then success is just a matter of time.Three strategies for starting a based business are, picking a working on-line business model, joining a program, and using daily action. Beginning a web business is not the problem of experiencing enough cash. It is about operating on it, and focusing on one chance, until it starts giving back. In this way you maximize your odds of making steady money online.

Passing the alcohol test: Fundamental properties of molecules have not changed during the past seven billion years

Dec. 14, 2012 ? The mass ratio of protons and electrons is deemed to be a universal constant. And rightly so, as the latest radio-astronomy observations of a distant galaxy have shown. Scientists at the VU University of Amsterdam and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn used the 100-metre radio telescope in Effelsberg to measure absorption lines of the methanol molecule at a number of characteristic frequencies. The researchers analysed the spectrum of the simplest of all the alcohols in a very distant galaxy. The result: to a high degree of accuracy molecules and molecular matter have the same properties today as they did seven billion years ago. According to this finding, the mass ratio of protons and electrons in particular has changed by less than one hundred thousandth of a percent in this period.

Measurements are the only way that physicists can find out about fundamental universal constants such as the proton-to-electron ratio. Although all terrestrial experiments produce the same value for this ratio, it would theoretically be possible for the constant to have a different value in different regions of the universe or at different times in its history. The methanol molecule is a suitable sensor for detecting such deviations.

A number of lines in the radio spectrum of this molecule would exhibit a significant frequency shift if the proton-to-electron mass ratio changed, while other lines would not be affected by this shift. A group at the VU University of Amsterdam only recently found out which property makes methanol such a sensitive sensor: ultimately it is a quantum tunnel effect which occurs if the internal rotation of the molecule is impeded. This effect leads to very high values for the sensitivity coefficients of the corresponding spectral lines, which can all be calculated individually.

"This makes the methanol molecule an ideal test case in order to discover a possible change in the proton-to-electron mass ratio over time," says Wim Ubachs, Professor at the VU University of Amsterdam and head of the physics department. "We therefore proposed a search for line radiation from methanol in the distant universe in order to compare the structure of the molecules thus found with the structure of today's methanol in laboratory experiments."

The team observed a galaxy where a number of different molecules had already been observed. The galaxy, which is in the line of sight of a high-intensity radio source called PKS1830-211, is about seven billion light years away from Earth. The scientists aimed for four different line transitions in the radio spectrum of the methanol molecule with their search program. And they were actually able to see all four lines with the aid of the 100-metre radio telescope in Effelsberg.

"As an optical astronomer it has been an interesting experience to carry out observations at the large wavelengths which occur in the radio range," says Julija Bagdonaite, doctoral student at the VU University of Amsterdam and lead author of the publication. "The methanol molecule had absorbed these radio waves seven billion years ago, and the waves have carried along its fingerprint from the distant past on their passage to Earth."

By analysing the quantum structure of the methanol molecule the researchers were able to deduce that two of its spectral lines which they observed at frequencies around 25 GHz were influenced hardly at all by a change in the proton-to-electron mass ratio. The other two lines reacted much more sensitively to a modification of this parameter.

"The source we investigated is by far the most suitable of all our observational objects for investigating the validity of our local physics even in very distant exotic environments," says Christian Henkel from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. "It would be fantastic if we could find more sources of this type which we could use to look even further back into the past."

The scientists also included systematic effects of the observations in the evaluation of the data and thus obtained the following result: in the course of the past seven billion years the mass ratio of protons and electrons has changed by a factor of 10-7 at most and is therefore rightly deemed to be a universal constant. This result can definitely be interpreted to mean that the structure of the molecular matter as derived from spectral observations agrees very accurately with the structure seven billion years ago. Possible deviations amount to a mere one hundred thousandth of a percent or even less.

"If we were really to find deviations in this fundamental constant, we would have a problem with our understanding of the foundations of physics," concludes Karl Menten, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. "Most importantly, this would violate Einstein's equivalence principle, the cornerstone of the general theory of relativity."

A Business Plan for Publishing Success - Write Nonfiction NOW!

?Today?s guest post is written by publishing attorney and author Susan Spann

business booksAll authors should have a business plan for every book, regardless of which publishing path the author intends to pursue. To be clear: A business plan is not a book proposal. A proposal is a tool authors use to sell a book ?on spec? (before the book is written). By contrast, a business plan is the author?s personal tool for writing, marketing, publishing and promoting a work.

It?s never too early or too late to get started, so let?s take a look at what your author business plan should contain and how to write it.

Traditional business plans have seven components, which together form the author?s ?road map? for writing, publishing and promotion. Let?s look at each section in turn:

1. The Overview contains a one to two-page summary of the plan as a whole. It?s hard to write a summary first, so write it after the rest of the plan is complete.

2. The Book Summary contains a one-page or two-page synopsis of the book the business plan covers. Remember: Synopses are always written in third-person present tense regardless of the manuscript?s style and voice.

3. The Marketing Strategies Section contains three sub-sections: pre-release, release phase, and post-release, each with plans and strategies for that phase.

  • Pre-release Marketing involves building platform and making contacts with readers, bloggers, authors, and other professionals. Advertising the book plays a role, but learning to manage social media and personal connections is critical, too. Remember: only genuine connections are effective. People know when they?re being used and don?t respond well to authors whose primary motivations are selfish ones. Become an information-provider ? someone with useful or interesting information that other people want to hear. The platform and relationship growth you establish in pre-release creates connections which turn into opportunities later on.
  • Release-phase Marketing starts when the book becomes available for pre-order and continues through the first 2-3 weeks after release. This is the phase when most sales are made ? and thus, where having a business plan can make the biggest difference. Release phase marketing should include both in-person and online appearances (think guest blogs, articles and interviews). If you have expertise in a relevant area, consider speaking at conferences, libraries, or even coffee houses. Think outside the box!
  • Post-release marketing begins about a month after the book releases. Initial buzz passes, sales may begin to decline. Don?t let this depress you! Books, readers, and sales go through cycles. In the post-release phase, an author should return to blogging, maintaining personal connections, and writing. Remember: the best advertisement for the last book is the next book.

4. The Competitive Analysis Section contains an analysis of the author?s current work in comparison to other books in the marketplace, and a plan to enhance the work?s strong points and minimize weaknesses. How to do this? Identify similar works in the market ? books that share genres, distribution methods or potential readers with the one you?ve written. Learn why those books sell, where they sell, and who buys them, and then learn from successful authors and publishers? methods. Writing out this analysis helps highlight patterns and also creates a resource for future works.

5. The Development Timeline contains a timeline for each phase of the author?s work. These timelines are most effective when authors use calendars and establish concrete dates. Build in time for delays ? life happens, and smart authors prepare for setbacks. This section of the business plan often contains:

  • A Writing and Editing Timeline. This sets out the schedule for writing the work. Plan time for at least two revisions ? and as many more as?you customarily use.
  • A Production and Publishing Timeline. For traditionally-published authors, this starts with submission of the manuscript to the author?s agent or publisher and ends on the date the book hits shelves. For independent authors, this timeline tracks the production process ? digital conversion, working with presses, and anything else required to transform the work from word processing document to finished book.
  • A Marketing and Distribution Timeline. This timeline will overlap the dates in the first two timelines, because it incorporates all three steps in the marketing process. Authors find it easier to keep marketing efforts on track with a calendar timeline that shows when each milestone should occur.

The key to effective timelines is flexibility: Use concrete dates, but don?t be afraid to revise as you go.

6. The Operations and Management Section contains detailed lists of the people responsible for each step of the writing, production, distribution, marketing, sales and fulfillment process, along with detailed contact and payment information for each. In addition to providing a ?one-stop resource? for important facts, this section also gives the author a resource to use with future projects.

7. The Budget may be simple or may be very complex, depending on whether the author publishes traditionally or independently and how much marketing the author intends to do (as well as other factors). The budget contains a detailed list of every cost the author will or may incur in the publishing, distribution, marketing, sales and fulfillment process, dates when each bill must be paid, and a total. (It?s okay to work from estimates, use firm numbers whenever possible.) Researching costs and preparing a budget helps independent authors set price points and helps all authors decide how much to spend on marketing.

Authors? costs fall into two primary categories:

  1. Production Costs like editing services and technology. Independent authors will have additional costs here, too, like cover art, publishing and distribution costs.
  2. Marketing and Promotional Costs include advertising, travel, giveaways (like review copies and reader contests), and any other sums the author spends on promotional activities. These numbers will vary, but all authors will have these costs ? and should plan them wisely.

Many authors find the thought of writing a business plan frightening, but if you take it step by step the simplicity may surprise you. Writing a business plan can improve your efficiency, help with sales, and even reduce your stress ? leaving you with more time and energy to focus on the part you really enjoy ? the writing!

They don't build 'em like they used to | Real Estate | South Philly ...

Believe it or not, modern houses are constructed better than their predecessors

Believe it or not, modern houses are constructed better than their predecessors

Arrol Gellner
Inman News?

When I hear people say, "They sure don't build houses like they used to," I think to myself, "Yeah, and it's a good thing, too."

Granted, the quality of many items in new homes -- doors, paint, hardware, and so on -- can't measure up to that of their vintage counterparts. But when it comes to actual structure and infrastructure, there's no comparison.

Starting at the bottom of things (the foundation), modern houses are already way ahead. Prewar foundations had little or no reinforcing steel in them, which is why sticking doors and crooked floors are so common in vintage houses. Thanks to increasingly stringent codes for earthquake safety, modern foundations contain plenty of reinforcement, which has the added benefit of them being level and in one piece.

Building codes also require today's houses to be much more robustly framed than their predecessors, many of which had shockingly weak structures. Victorian houses, for instance, typically sat atop tottering "cripple walls" that made these already spindly and top-heavy structures even more susceptible to earthquakes, hurricanes and flood damage. Today, the use of inexpensive metal framing connectors such as joist hangers and tie straps produce far stronger houses at a very modest additional cost.

Modern building infrastructure systems such as plumbing, heating and electrical are also leagues beyond their vintage counterparts. Take plumbing systems, for example -- prewar homes typically used rust- and occlusion-prone galvanized steel water piping. Most modern plumbing systems, on the other hand, use durable, trouble-free copper.

Likewise, houses predating 1940 or so employed knob-and-tube wiring systems with cloth-insulated wires that were embrittled by heat and attractive to rodents. Worse, these systems were protected by simple plug fuses that could be (and often were) circumvented by clueless owners -- the infamous "penny in the fuse box" trick that led to many an electrical fire.

Modern home electrical systems, on the other hand, use circuit breakers that can't be tampered with. They also provide ample electrical capacity and plenty of outlets, doing away with the tangles of dangerous extension cords so ubiquitous in old houses.

And speaking of fires, it's no accident that fewer deadly fires occur in newer homes than in older ones. Rather, it's because today's building codes require interlinked smoke detectors, and many codes now also require fire sprinklers as well. Together, these improvements have dramatically reduced the incidence of fatal house fires.

Lastly, and perhaps most apparent to us in day-to-day life, new houses are far and away more comfortable and energy efficient than their old-time predecessors. Although we like to think of homes from the "good old days" as being warm and snug, most lacked wall and attic insulation to conserve heat and instead relied on huge, wasteful gas furnaces to keep them warm.

Thanks to modern energy efficiency standards, however, gone are the days of huge furnaces that lost more than half of their heat energy up the chimney or by radiation from poorly insulated ductwork. Today's high-efficiency furnaces, coupled with other features such as mandatory floor, wall and ceiling insulation, mean modern houses are many times more energy efficient than grandma's cottage was.

Given all these improvements, next time you hear someone say, "They don't build houses like they used to," tell them they're absolutely right.
