Brave New UI: A Fleet of Dust-Sized Sensors Embedded In Your Brain

A few weeks ago, we wrote about a tiny micro-bot designed to be injected into a patient?s eye and controlled via magnet?a speck-sized eye surgeon. This week, a group of Berkeley researchers published a study positing a similar concept, except the ?bots are inside your brain. And they?re the size of dust particles. It?s called neural dust. Of course.

World & UK News: New jobs 'in low paid industries'

Four in five new jobs are in industries where the average wage is less than ?8 an hour, according to researchers.

Some 79% of the 587,000 net rise in jobs since June 2010 has come in low-paid industries such as retail and residential care, said the TUC.

Low-paid industries are defined as those where the average hourly wage is ?7.95 or lower. In high-paid industries, the average hourly wage is ?17.40 or higher.

The union umbrella group's report The UK's Low Pay Recovery, which analyses official figures, finds that retail has made the biggest contribution to rising employment levels, with the number of jobs in this sector increasing by 234,000.

The average wage in retail is just ?7.35 an hour, the TUC says, while residential care, where the average wage is ?7.78 per hour, makes the second biggest contribution of 155,000 jobs.

Just over one in five (23%) of new jobs created since June 2010 have been in the highly paid computer programming, consultancy and related services industry, where the average hourly wage is ?18.40. The workforce in this sector has grown by 131,000.

In middle-paid industries, which account for nearly three-quarters of the UK workforce and where the average wage is between ?7.95 and ?17.40 per hour, there has been no net job creation since June 2010.

While some industries, such as legal and accounting, have created jobs (135,000), others such as public administration (-160,000) and social work (-68,000) have shed them.

The TUC said it was concerned that the overwhelming majority of new jobs have been created in low-paid sectors, with many workers having to take a big drop in their salaries and stall their careers in order to stay in work.

General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: "The Government frequently boasts about record levels of employment, even though people's job chances have fallen in recent months. But what's more concerning is that four in five new jobs are in industries where the average wage is less than ?8 an hour."

Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, center, flanked by military and civilian leaders in including reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei, far left, Tamarod leader Mahmoud Badr, second left, Grand Sheik of Al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb, third from right, and Pope Tawadros II, second from right, as he addresses the nation on Egyptian State Television Wednesday, July 3, 2013. The armed forces ousted Egypt's first democratically elected president Wednesday after just a year in power, installing a temporary civilian government, suspending the constitution and calling for new elections. Islamist President Mohammed Morsi denounced it as a "full coup" by the military. After the televised announcement by the army chief, millions of anti-Morsi protesters in cities around the country erupted in delirious scenes of joy, with shouts of "God is great" and "Long live Egypt." (AP Photo/Egyptian State Television)

(AP) ? Facing unrelenting pressure from Muslim Brotherhood protesters, Egypt's military chief sought to justify his decision to remove Mohmmed Morsi from office, saying Sunday in a televised speech that the Islamist leader had violated his popular mandate and antagonized state institutions.

The comments by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi ? his first since the president's ouster nearly two weeks ago ? came as the designated interim prime minister pushed ahead with talks to form a new Cabinet this week.

Reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as Egypt's interim vice president for international relations on Sunday. The move reinforces the role of liberals in the new leadership who are strongly opposed to the Brotherhood.

Several secular-minded candidates also have been approached to lead the foreign, finance, culture, information and other key ministries. Nabil Fahmy, who served as Egypt's former ambassador to the United States for over a decade under Hosni Mubarak, was tapped to be foreign minister, according to state media.

The United States sent its No. 2 diplomat in the State Department, William Burns, to Cairo to meet with interim government officials as well as civil society and business leaders during his two-day visit. Burns is the first high-level American official to visit since Morsi's ouster.

Many in the international community fear the ouster of Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, would undermine Egypt's transition to democracy.

The State Department said Burns would underscore U.S. support for the Egyptian people and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government. The United States has called for Morsi's release. Since his ouster, Morsi has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed location.

El-Sissi said the armed forces acted to remove Morsi on July 3 according to the will of the people as the country was sliding toward deeper polarization and more violence. The Islamist leader was the first democratically chosen leader after a narrow victory in elections last year.

"The armed forces sincerely accepted the choice of the people, but then political decision-making began stumbling," el-Sissi said. "The armed forces remained committed to what it considered the legitimacy of the ballot box, even though that very legitimacy began to do as it pleased and in a way that contradicted the basis and the origin of this legitimacy."

Morsi's election came after months of turmoil following the 2011 revolution that removed autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak from office, in a rocky transition that was marred by persistent protests, political disagreements and an economy teetering on bankruptcy.

His supporters say the military staged a coup in a bid to undermine the rising influence of Islamists, and thousands have camped out for days near a mosque in eastern Cairo to demand he be reinstated. The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Morsi to power, has called for massive protests Monday to escalate pressure on the military. Some Muslim Brotherhood leaders have called for el-Sissi to be removed, and put on trial accusing him of treason.

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad el-Haddad responded to el-Sissi's remarks, saying that the military had no right to act on behalf of the people of Egypt except through "orders of their elected commander in chief," meaning Morsi. In comments posted on Twitter, he said the military also has no right to decide which protest is worthy enough to represent the people.

Morsi was ousted by the military after four days of protests by millions of his opponents.

El-Sissi said Morsi "entered into a conflict with the judiciary, the media, the police and the public opinion. Then (he) also entered into a conflict with the armed forces." He didn't elaborate on the nature of the conflict with the military, but said that comments about the military offended "and were considered a stab to the national pride."

El-Sissi, speaking to an auditorium filled with military officers, said the armed forces could no longer stand on the sidelines as millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for the Islamist leader to step down over allegations he was abusing his power.

The military chief said he frequently advised Morsi and finally reached out to him before giving him a 48-hour ultimatum to reconcile with opponents and address public demands. He said he sent two envoys, including then Prime Minister Hesham Kandil and a trusted legal expert, urging the president to hold a referendum on whether voters still supported his presidency, but the suggestion was rejected out of hand.

El-Sissi appealed to all parties, in an apparent nod to Morsi's supporters, to participate in the new transition, saying it is overseen by an unbiased leader and will restore the right of people to choose.

But continuing its crackdown on the Brotherhood leadership, Egypt's new chief prosecutor ordered frozen the assets of Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie and at least 13 other senior members of the group pending investigations into deadly violence outside the organization's headquarters in Cairo and the Republic Guard forces club.

Meanwhile, the military-backed government pressed forward with its transition plan. ElBaradei, a 71-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, was sworn in as vice president for international relations, although his exact mandate was not clear. The former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog based in Vienna, returned home to assume a role in the anti-Mubarak uprising and became one of the most visible leaders in the badly fractured Egyptian liberal and secular opposition to Morsi's government.

Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the National Salvation Front, a coalition of largely secular groups, said ElBaradei was no longer the head of the umbrella organization because "he is now a vice president for all Egyptians."

Designated prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi also met with a number of candidates for his new Cabinet, which is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Others expected on the roster are Mohammed Mukhtar Gomaa ? who works in the office of the head of the top learning institute in the Muslim Sunni world Al-Azhar ? as head of the religious endowment ministry. Gomaa, who also heads the faculty of Islamic and Arabic studies in Al-Azhar university, was seen as nod to moderate Islam.

The fast-track transitional timetable included also appointing two panels to amend the constitution passed under Morsi. Those changes would be put to a referendum within about 4 1/2 months. Parliamentary elections would be held within two months, and once the new parliament convenes it would have a week to set a date for a presidential election.

Violence in the aftermath of Morsi's ouster peaked a week ago Monday when the military opened fire on Brotherhood supporters who were holding a sit-in outside the Republican Guard forces club, leading to hours of clashes. More than 50 protesters were killed and hundreds wounded. The Brotherhood claimed the military opened fire on protesters, while the army says it was responding to Morsi supporters trying to storm the Republican Guard building.

Human Rights Watch said it appeared that "the military and police used unnecessary force" and that prosecutors have investigated only Brotherhood supporters and leaders for their alleged roles in the clashes, but not security forces.

"It is not clear from the footage which side used live ammunition first," according to HRW's statement Sunday, which added that "what is clear... is that the army responded with lethal force that far exceeded any apparent threat to the lives of military personnel."

Meanwhile, violence was on the rise in the restive Sinai peninsula. Soon after midnight, militants fired a missile at a moving armored police vehicle south of North Sinai's capital el-Arish, hitting instead a nearby bus carrying workers going to a local cement factory, security officials said. Three factory workers were killed and 16 were injured, including three in serious condition, medical officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Security officials said militants also blew up a police station under construction in central Sinai by detonating explosive devices, leaving a resident seriously injured.

Militant groups have lashed out following the military ouster of Morsi, targeting police stations and security checkpoints and vowing to drive the military out of the area.

In the past 10 days, at least eight security officers have been killed. Christians in the area have also been targeted. Two Christians were killed, one a priest. A gas pipeline to Jordan was bombed, ending a lull in such strikes.

Bring Three Key Stories with You to Your Next Job Interview

Bring Three Key Stories with You to Your Next Job Interview

The next time you're preparing for an interview, instead of trying to rehearse answers to dozens of common questions, think of three sweeping stories that describe times you did great work, worked with difficult people, or rose to a challenge. Real stories and conversations go farther than stock answers, anyway.

Over at On Careers, Rebecca Thorman explains that rather than trying to craft the perfect answer for some of the interview questions you'll likely hear, it's better to go through your resume and cover letter and try to pin down three good, broad stories of times you were proud of your work, worked under pressure, and that illustrate your skills and expertise. That way regardless of the interview question you get, you can tie your answer back to those specific stories, and continue to draw from them over the course of your interview.

Obviously you don't want to just repeat yourself, but there's something to be said for giving consistent answers and having a few great stories that your interviewer or panel of interviewers can remember, as opposed to a dozen different small stories for each question. Telling a real story of a time you were proud of your work also comes off genuine (since, ideally, it should be) and presents a solid, complete picture of yourself to a potential manager. Remember, the more your interview is a real conversation, as opposed to just a Q&A, the better your chances are at getting the job.

Rebecca offers up a number of other useful tips for interview prep at the link below, but this is one that really caught our eye. Often we focus so much on getting the answer to the question right that we forget it's equally (if not more) important to present an hiring manager with a complete, genuine picture of ourselves?that's what can really set you apart.

Microsoft sues U.S. Customs office to force Google phone ban

Here's another Microsoft-Motorola Mobility battle brewing, but we have a new party in the mix: U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Windows maker filed a lawsuit on Friday at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington against the federal agency.

Notably, Microsoft also named also named Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in the complaint.

According to reports, Microsoft filed the complaint to force U.S. Customs to follow through on a previous ban against the import of mobile phones made by Google-owned Motorola.

That ban, issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission, is supposed to be in effect through at least April 2018.

However, Microsoft is saying that Google and the U.S. Customs office colluded in secret meetings to allow imports to continue.

There are actually a number of these phone bans floating around right now.

Earlier this week, Apple pleaded to the ITC to hold off on a sales ban that would see older iPhone and iPad models pulled from shelves until a court evaluates the appeal.

That request sprouted up just over a month after the ITC issued a limited import ban on some Apple products following a ruling that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company infringed on a Samsung-owned patent,?U.S. Patent No. 7,706,348.

Apple could still be in the luck though because the final ruling could be overturned by the Federal Circuit Court or the White House.

The likely next step for the Microsoft-U.S. Customs-Google/Motorola case is appeal over the aforementioned ITC ban, scheduled for August 6.

is a long distance relationship ever worth the heartache?

__scan0002Long-distance relationships can be either entirely awful or decadently awesome, depending on who you talk to and the experiences they?ve had.

You rarely hear of a middle ground, a long-distance relationship that was just ?okay? ? if the relationship doesn?t work well, there?s often not enough reason to continue in the direction of potential heartbreak.

A long-distance relationship requires maintaining a level of trust and intimacy that either works well for both parties and serves to strengthen the bond between them, or doesn?t work at all and results in everything falling apart in a screaming, pining heap.

There are very few women who would actively seek out a long-distance, long-term love affair. After all, why on earth would you do that to yourself? In comparison to a ?normal? relationship, the extra benefits are few.

But the positives that do present themselves when maintaining such a partnership are powerful and, speaking from personal experience, can be well worth the effort invested.

Having been very much in love with a man who lives 800 kilometres away for the last six months or so, I can testify that it?s not all bad, and definitely not as difficult as you might think. While the term ?pining? has now become a regular part of my vocabulary, I?ve found that the old adage of absence making the heart grow fonder is very much based in truth.

Without constant access to one another, my partner and I thoroughly enjoy the time we do spend together. We get roughly four days a month in each other?s company, and as a result of that, every minute we spend together is something we make the most of. Six months in, and that ?butterflies in the stomach? feeling is still very much alive. We simply don?t see each other enough for it to wear off.

We talk every night on the phone, meaning that we have officially spent more time talking than fucking in the ?honeymoon? stage of our relationship ? not something that would have happened had we lived within driving distance of one another.

1The success of a long-distance relationship may be based, at least partially, in the communicative abilities of the couple involved. A certain amount of jealously and anxiety is almost unavoidable in most relationships, and especially in those conducted over a distance.

It can be difficult to work through that when you can?t physically interact with your partner, when having a face-to-face conversation is impossible. It requires bare honesty and an ability to be understanding, even when you don?t want to be.

All of that lovely prose and positive energy aside? some days, it just sucks. Not being able to get a cuddle when you?ve had a bad day is horrible. Feeling as though you may actually be in a relationship with your vibrator is worse. Worrying that not only may that spark between yourself and your partner disappear, but that it may have already gone and you just haven?t seen them recently enough for that to be evident? that?s torture.

Given all those factors, it?s no surprise that long-distance relationships get a particularly bad rep for being awful. But I can testify to the awesome, too. And in reality, a long-distance relationship may just be unavoidable.

You don?t choose who you fall in love with. Or how far away they live.

US exit: India steps up Afghan army training

NEW DELHI: India is stepping up training of Afghan National Army (ANA) in a major way, even as it also considers supply of military equipment to the fledgling force, in the backdrop of the US-led coalition preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2014.

Defence ministry sources say "a major Indian effort has been launched for capability enhancement of the ANA" to ensure it can handle the internal security of Afghanistan after the progressive exit of the 100,000 foreign soldiers from there by end-2014.

India is worried about the stability of the strategically-located Afghanistan after the withdrawal because it is likely to witness a concomitant surge in the activity of the Taliban and its deadly arms like the Haqqani network, which have long worked in league with the Pakistani Army against Indian interests.

Defence minister A K Antony, in fact, recently warned the Indian military brass to be on guard to tackle "any spillover effect" in Jammu & Kashmir and elsewhere due to Pakistan's continuing support to the Taliban and its inroads into Afghanistan.

Though India has worked largely on re-construction and developmental projects in the war-ravaged country over the last decade, it is now also boosting the "capacity-building" of ANA. If 574 ANA personnel were trained in different Indian Army establishments in 2012-13, for instance, the number will be "well over 1,000" in 2013-14.

The training includes counter-terrorism operations, military field-craft, signals, intelligence, counter-IED, information technology, battle-field nursing assistance and, of course, the English language. Afghan personnel are also being "attached" to the Infantry School at Mhow, Artillery School at Devlali and Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre at Ahmednagar for specialized courses.

India has also posted some Army officers in the central Asian nation teach basic military and English skills as well as military doctors to help at hospitals in Kandahar and elsewhere. The training of Afghan pilots and technicians in operating Russian-origin Mi-35 helicopter gunships is also on the anvil.

A joint Indian military-civilian team had also gone to Kabul earlier this month after Afghan President Hamid Karzai submitted "a wish list" of military equipment to India during a visit here in May. The 17-page list includes armoured vehicles, 105mm artillery guns, utility helicopters, trucks, communication equipment and the like.

Sources said the visit of an ANA "Strategic Group", with 10 high-ranking officers, was also planned to India from September 1 to 13. The delegation will hold talks with the top military brass here, part from visiting military establishments in Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore.
