Israel Bombed Syria - Business Insider

The Syrian military claims that early Wednesday Israeli warplanes bombed a military research center northwest of Damascus ? not a convoy of trucks headed to Lebanon as previously reported.

Earlier reports of the airstrike indicated that the jets targeted a convoy of trucks carrying Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles near the Syria-Lebanon border.

Syrian state news agency SANA reports the strike destroyed a military research center "responsible for raising the levels of resistance and self-defense" in Damascus, killing two people were killed and wounding five others.

Damascus is located about 10 miles from the Lebanese border.?

From SANA:

?The General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said ... Israeli warplanes snuck from the north of Al-Sheikh Mountain, flying at a low altitude and below radars, heading to Jamraya in Damascus Countryside ... and bombarded the location before sneaking away."

Earlier reports indicated that the strike occurred in Lebanon but now the consensus is that the attack occurred "deep inside Syrian territory" ? making it the first time since 2007 that the Israeli Air Force has attacked a target in Syria.

Now the big question is whether it was a convoy of trucks or a military research building that was bombed.

The Syrian military "stressed that the allegations of some media outlets that the Israeli warplanes targeted a convoy headed from Syria to Lebanon are baseless, with the General Command affirming that the Israeli warplane targeted a scientific research facility in blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and airspace."

American officials told The New York Times?the Israelis had notified the U.S. about the attack, and that the U.S. believes the target was a convoy taking weapons to Lebanon.

Either way, the strike is a significant escalation of the geopolitical conflict in the region as a top aide to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday that any "attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran?s allies.?

The Times notes that Avi Dichter, the minister for the home front, told Israel Radio on Tuesday that options to prevent Syria from using or transferring chemical or conventional weapons included deterrence and ?attempts to hit the stockpiles.?

Lenovo's Q3 sees sales reach $9.4 billion, profits rise to $200 million

DNP Lenovo Q3 results

While big chunks of the industry may be feeling gloomy, the artist formerly known as IBM's PC Division keeps on raking in money. Lenovo's third quarter earnings report reveals that the company sold $9.4 billion worth of hardware, keeping $200 million of that back for itself in net profit. It's also seen its Chinese smartphone business turn a profit, and is now eyeing Russia as the next land ripe for conquering. Lenovo's corporate mattress is so stuffed that it probably smells of money, as the company has squirreled away $4.2 billion for a rainy day, or, you know, something else.

Disney has confirmed last week?s leaked monster news that J.J Arbams will direct ?Star Wars Episode VII?.

Here?s the press release :

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

?It?s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,? said Kennedy. ?J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.?

George Lucas went on to say ?I?ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He?s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn?t be in better hands.?

?To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,? J.J. Abrams said. ?I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.?

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year?s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm?s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Meantime, Paramount?s been quick to confirm they?re still in the ?JJ? business.

?J.J. will continue to develop projects for us including a new ?Mission: Impossible,? and he is committed to produce another ?Star Trek,?? Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore told Hero Complex Friday afternoon.

While it?s only stated that J.J Abrams will produce ?Trek 3?, that doesn?t necessarily mean he won?t end up directing the film too.

St. Louis, nation mourns Musial's death

By R.B. FALLSTROM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:23 a.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs was at a party back home in Georgia for his sister's wedding when the gathering suddenly turned somber.

The news had spread that Hall of Famer Stan Musial died on Saturday. He was 92.

"Everybody knew who Stan Musial was," Boggs said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Everyone knew what a great person he was."

A moment of silence was observed before the start of the Rhode Island-Saint Louis men's basketball game across town, and prior to the third period of the St. Louis Blues' NHL opener against the Detroit Red Wings when public address announcer Tom Calhoun described Musial as "St. Louis' favorite son."

Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa interrupted his annual Animal Rescue Foundation event onstage to pass on the sad news. The Cardinals set up a memorial around the larger of the two Musial statues, a longtime meeting place for fans, outside Busch Stadium.

"Obviously, everybody is heartbroken," current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said at the Blues game. "There's a lot of people who will quote his stats to you, but what makes it so touching is how it affects people's lives."

Former Cardinals star Albert Pujols weighed in with a tweet: "My prayers are with the Musial family tonight. I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live. Rest in Peace."

Current Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, too: "Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform. Prayers to the Musial family."

Many recalled Musial as the most selfless of sports heroes. Boggs was touched by Musial's enthusiasm when the pitcher cracked the major leagues in 2008.

"He was one of the best players to ever play the game, and he was very happy for me when I made my first team," Boggs said. "He was extremely kind to me. He was one of a kind."

Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog said Musial was a player he'd have loved to have written onto his lineup card. He said Musial's influence provided a helpful push in his election to the Hall.

"He was always great to me when I was a nobody," Herzog said. "He will always be Mr. Baseball. You can go around the world and you'll never find a better human being than Stan Musial."

Musial had been in poor health for several years and Herzog remembered a conversation at the funeral of Musial's wife, Lillian, last May in which Musial indicated he was ready for the end of his life.

"I always wanted to live to be 100," Herzog recalled Musial saying, "but I didn't want to live to be 100 like this."

All of Musial's admirers preferred to recall the long-lasting glory days.

"I never got to see him play but I saw what type of person he was and what type of impact he had in this city," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "That made me realize how lucky we were to have him."

Commissioner Bud Selig said baseball lost "one of its true legends," adding that Musial had been a "Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life."

"All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers and all the fans of the Cardinals," Selig said.

Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said: "The mold broke with Stan. There will never be another like him."

"Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game, with his many successes on the diamond, the passion with which he played, and his engaging personality," he said.

Blues Hall of Famer Bernie Federko commented on Musial after broadcasting the hockey team's 6-0 victory over Detroit.

"He never acted like a famous ballplayer, he just acted like a normal guy. He always had time for everyone, and he looked you in the eye," Federko said. "It's a sad day but to go at 92, it's a great life. I lost my dad last year at 92 the same way. If we all signed up for 92 years, we'd be pretty happy about it."

AP source: Inaugural ball to feature Lady Gaga

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Watch out Beyonce and Katy Perry. There's another diva set to perform during the inauguration festivities ? Lady Gaga.

A person familiar with the inauguration tells The Associated Press that the pop star will perform at Tuesday's ball for White House staffers. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because that person wasn't authorized to publicly reveal the information.

The staff ball is typically a private affair. During the last inauguration festivities, Jay-Z reportedly performed for that event.

According to one attendee, Jay-Z rapped a riff on one of his hit songs, "99 Problems but George Bush Ain't One," to the delight of the throngs of young staffers who worked to elect Obama in 2008.

The Moncton Times@Transcript - Good and Bad: Jan.19: The ...

This is not (read NOT) a criticism of reporters. It is a criticism of editors and the whole news business.

Back when we were both starting out in the world world, a classmate became a journalist - and a very good one, retiring as news chief for CBC in Montreat. But his first job......

......was with Canadian Press. It assigned him to cover the Quebec assembly. He couldn't speak a word of French. (He?would later become? quite fluent in it but, oh, it was hell?trying to cover Quebec politics without any ability to speak the language.??And that sort of assignment is not unusual in journalism.

No editor would think of sending a reporter to cover a hockey game if the reporter had never even seen a game in his life. Readers would be enraged if he did. But that sort of standard is to be found only in sports spages and Hollywood gossip columns. Otherwise, reporters are commonly assigned to topics they know nothing about. That's why they end up writing whatever they're told; there are no probing question because the reporter has no idea what to probe.

Today has two, big stories on education on A1 and A15. The headline for the first is "Student success depends on monitoring". (standardized testing). ?Oh? Really? Then how come millions of schools all over the world have produced successful students without monitoring??? (This one shows us that the editor is ignorant of education, too, because it's the editor who writers the headlines.)

If you read those two stories, it's obvious that the reporter wrote down only what she was told to write down. There appear to have been no questions except, perhaps,?for, "could you repeat that last line, please?"

But there were questions to ask. The reference is to standardized, province-wide testing. And there are lots of questions to ask.

The pressure for these exams began with Atlantic Insitute of Market Studies (which itself knows nothing about education.) Thanks to its connection with names like Irving, it got a contract to set up and administer such tests. And why would Mr. Irving (who almost certainly?also knows nothing about education) have such a keen interest? Well, it might have something to do with the big push for privatization of education in the US which has produced great profits at the expense of parents, made a shambles of the whole US education system, and left the remaining public schools as an (underfunded)?jungle for the poor.

Does AIMS still hold that contract? Is privatization of our public schools still the objective?

The results show improvement in learning. Yes, indeed. But?could a smart exam-setter?rig that by making the exams a little easier each year - or by easing up on the marking?

What also can (and does) happen is that the exam can determine what the curriculum will be. In other words, schools are forced to teach?for the exam, rather than for the students. And, no, the two are not the same.

There are lots of other questions. But you'll find none of them asked in this "Special Report". The result - a story that really tells us nothing - but does feed us a propaganda line favouring the Department of Education and, possibly, AIMS and Mr. Irving.

Again, it's not the reporter's fault. It's the fault of a journalism tradition of laziness and sloppiness at the highest levels. That's why the only pages you can trust are sports and gossip. (Usually).

There's a good story on C1, "Native Women lash out at Harper". One of the women is quoted as saying, "There are strong and growing racial undertones to much of the reaction seen so far to protests over aboriginal treaty rights." Of course there are.

Canadians have a powerful tradition of racism. They don't know it, partly because you'll find very little of it in school history courses, and partly because very few racists ever realize that they are racist. Nothing wrong with them. It's always that other group that looks different from them that's the problem.

Harper is quite deliberately exploiting the racism he knows is there. O, Canada.

Incidentally, some news sources carried the story that the Queen has announced that she does not wish to become involved in the Idle No More controversy. Very impressive. I'm surprised to see it not quoted in today's editorial. However, that story just takes us back to the sloppiness of the world of journalism.

The Queen can say only what her advisor tells her to say - and she MUST say that. Her advisor in Canadian matters is Harper. Most of the stories I've seen don't mention that.

You will learn nothing about Syria, Mali, Algeria, Libya or most of Africa. The suffering is terrible. But it doesn't matter because they aren't real people like us. Most of the fighting is inspired, supplied and encouraged by us. But that doesn't matter because they aren't real people like us. In Syria the foreign mercenaries, heavily made up of Al Quaeda and other jihadists are still called "rebels" even though they aren't Syrians at all.

Our "liberation" of Libya has created a dysfunctional country that is a safe haven for Al-Quaeda and a great supplier of?weapons. France's intervention in Mali, now spreading to Algreria, has provided a great boost for Al Quaeda, making it more powerful than it has ever been - and rolling in money donated by our good allies in Saudi Arabia (the country which supplied most of the 9/11 terrorists but was never even slapped on the wrist. Quite a contrast with Afghanistan and Iraq which had nothing to do with 9/11. Israel is moving even further to the far right, is determined to rule Palestine forever (according to Nethanyahu) and determined to attack Iran. But it has nowhere close to the population to do all that. However, it does have some 200 (at least) nuclear weapons. Something to look forward to.

Iraq is on the edge of collapsing into a civil war. Afghanistan has been a military, economic and human disaster with no hope of a win for us - or even a definition of what a win could possibly mean.

What a comfort to know that American big business has been in control of all this (a sort of PPP), and has also driven the US into unadmitted bankruptcy and poverty.

So just trust the wisdom of big business to look after these things. Just read your Times and Transcript; and you won't even know anything is happening.

Oh, a recent BBC polls shows that a majority of Syrians actually support the government, not the 'rebels'. However, our business leaders are confident they know better.? That's why they're supporting the 'rebels' and want to make them the government - even though Syrians don't want them, and even though the 'rebels'?are heavily jihadist.

Our business leaders are deep thinkers. Deep. It's the old delusion, "If I'm rich, I must be smart."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Our beloved Health Minister seems to be pushing himself into the news a great deal lately. He publicly humiliates his chief health adviser ;and ignores her advice so he can support shale gas. He has launched a pre-emptive and scatter-gun attack on the whole medical profession over a billing story whose facts, as even he admits, are not clear. Now, he announces that the Emergency Room system doesn't make sense.

Medical professionals, some of whom know almost as much about medicine as Mr. Flemming does, say that what he labels as not making sense because of its cost does make sense.?It?doesn't make sense on a corporate balance sheet; but it?make sense because of patient needs. (And one would think that patient needs are kind of important in all this brouhaha.)

What's obvious is that Mr. Flemming is seeking attention (perhaps socially lonely; and I could understand that),perhaps because he has some political objective. What's also obvious is that he is publicly humiliating and damaging the whole medical system in this province. And he's doing it with stunning arrogance, and arrogance that does not seem to be matched by his intellect.

He might also consider buying shirts one size (at least) larger so he can do up the top button, and properly align his necktie.

Norbert Cunningham's column should be on the Faith page. Quite seriously. It's far better than anything else I have ever seen on that page. Agree with him or disagree (and I pretty much?agree) this is a well-researched and we-expressed opinion. This is exactly what we should see on an editorial page.

Bill Belliveau is enthusiastic about Obama's plans for gun control. I do wish I could agree. The US, from years of illusions created by super-patriotic classes, movies, books about American history and further brainwashed? by news media, is a nation?os people who live in fear and paranoia. And who worship violence. Generals are heroes and serious possibilities for president in the US that in any other democracy I know.?Then take a look at the latest issues of Batman and Superman comics. The heroes aren't only violent; they're seriously mentally disturbed. Evil is everywhere. Violence is the only answer.

Already convinced that government threatens freedom (in fact, personal freedom was destroyed a long time ago in the US - by government, but by government controlled by big money), gun-owners, already driven to a frenzy by the NRA in addition to the regular brainwashing, are almost certain to react with violence.

Incidentally, one third of all gun deaths in the US are suicides. Another big bloc of deaths is children, often by accident with a gun owned by a family member. Then there's domestic violence. I could not find any shootings in the US related to defending freedom.

Brent Mazerolle's column is the usual trivia that should not be on an op ed page. It belongs on a page with the game, "How many differences can you find between these two pictures?"

Gwynne Dyer's column is superb - and more than a little frightening.

Letters to?the editor has a letter than is painful to me. "Was Samaritan victim of scam?" It's from a reader who was approached by a pesentable young man who told him he needed $13 buy milk for his baby. Next day, he met an old friend who had been approaced by almost certainly the same man with the same story. The writer was embarassed at feeling he had been naive. Let me ease his embarassment.

In downtown Montreal, I?was on my way to meet friends at a watering-hole. A shabby man with his hand on his throat apprached me. He was stranded in Montreal on his way to a hospital for treatment for cancer of the throat. Could I help him get something to eat?

Well, gee. Cancer. Stranded. So I gave him the price of decent meal. He took the money with the hand that had been on his throat, and breathed a thank you on me. He reeked of alcohol.

I prefer to think someone must have spilled it on him.

CSN: Weaver 'had a clarity and vision for baseball'

As thousands of fans were arriving for the Orioles? FanFest celebration on Saturday morning, they were hearing the news that the team?s greatest manager, Earl Weaver died.

The 82-year-old Weaver died of an apparent heart attack on a cruise associated with the Orioles early Saturday.

Weaver, who was honored with a statue in his honor last June, was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996.

His lifetime record was 1480-1060, and he his team won the 1970 World Series and four pennants in 1969-71 and 1979.

He managed the Orioles from 1968-1982 and again from 1985-86.

?Earl Weaver stands alone as the greatest manager in the history of the Orioles organization and one of the greatest in the history of baseball,? Orioles owner Peter Angelos said.

?This is a sad day for everyone who knew h him and for all Orioles fans. Earl made his passion for the Orioles known both on and off the field. On behalf of the Orioles, I extend my condolences to his wife, Marianne, and his family.?

During their talk with the season ticket holders at FanFest, Buck Showalter, who became close to Weaver, was clearly moved at hearing the news.

?It?s a very sad day for all us,? Showalter said.

?He loved the year we were having last year. He gave some advice along the way,? Showalter said. ?I think Earl would say I hope it won?t mess up FanFest.?

Duquette has long admired Weaver and has a well worn copy of his book, ?Weaver on Strategy.?

?He had a clarity and vision for baseball,? he said.

Weaver moved Cal Ripken from third base to shortstop and in 1982 and was the manager when Ripken started his streak.

"Earl was such a big part of Orioles baseball and personally he was a very important part of my life and career and a great friend to our family. ?His passion for the game and the fire with which he managed will always be remembered by baseball fans everywhere and certainly by all of us who had the great opportunity to play for him. ?Earl will be missed but he can't and won't be forgotten," Ripken said.

Avatar tirelessly screens for - and catches - liars

4 hrs.

Long lines at border crossings and airport security checkpoints may be trimmed with the help of a grey metal box about the size of an ATM with an avatar on a computer monitor described by one reporter as a "late-model Max Headroom."

Wired takes an in-depth look at the Embodied Avatar project being developed by researchers at the University of Arizona. The avatar?detects liars by asking people a list of short questions as it monitors their eye movements, body language, and vocal tones during each answer.

Research into what happens when we lie?indicates our pupils dilate, we fidget more and our vocal?pitch changes in slight, tell-tale ways. The avatar is trained to pick up those signs, which it does remarkably well.

For now, the machine is getting a limited workout at a border crossing in Arizona, but its success rates in trials ? 94 percent when tested in Poland ?has caught the attention of the Department of Homeland Security.

?An avatar interrogator has many advantages over its human counterparts. It?s consistent, tireless, and susceptible to neither persuasion nor bribery,? Wired noted.

People flagged by the Embodied Avatar in Arizona are pulled aside for further questioning by humans who, when acting alone, catch only 54 percent of liars.

More information on the Embodied Avatar technology, the history of lie detectors and research into the art of detecting a deceiver is laid out in Wired's feature. Read it.?

Wiggin? Out: A Look Ahead to 2014 NBA Draft

Scouting the top ranked high school player, and projected #1 draft pick in 2014, Andrew Wiggins.

He has been called a sure thing and a franchise changer. Over the next year and a half, a handful of NBA teams will be maneuvering themselves into better draft position in order to land the next Lebron James. Andrew Wiggins, son of former Florida State star and NBA player Mitchell Wiggins, is an uber-athletic wing with incredible explosiveness. He leads his Huntington Prep [WV] team in scoring just over 25 points and grabbing almost 9 rebounds per game.

With him reclassifying to the class of 2013, the 6-8 Wiggins replaced Jabari Parker as the top recruit in the nation. Many feel that Wiggins is the best prospect in the nation, high school and college combined, and that he is a surefire #1 pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

I had a chance to watch Wiggins in a a 70-49 blowout of Cape Henry Collegiate in a nationally televised game on ESPN. I have to admit that I have not seen Wiggins play prior to this game so I was excited to get the opportunity to see what all the hype was about. I had the chance to see Jabari Parker a week ago on ESPN, so it was an opportunity to get a comparison of the two top ranked players in their class.

Keep in mind, I am of the belief that one game does not make a good scouting report. Players can have good or bad games, and there is no way to know if that is how the player truly plays or if it was a one game phenomenon. So in that spirit, take my review as only a snapshot of one game, and nothing that I say about this kid necessarily means he is or isn?t the player everyone says he is.

The first thing that was readily apparent was Wiggins? athleticism. This guy is incredibly quick, agile and bouncy. Several times in the game, Wiggins was able to explode by multiple defenders without a care in the world. Even more impressive was the fact he was able to control his body and change direction in order to avoid help defenders trying to take a charge. A lot of player can break players down off the dribble, but it is pretty special to find a player that can avoid the second and third defender. In comparison, Jabari Parker was also very capable breaking past his defender, but was not as nimble avoiding the help defenders, at lest from what I saw of him.

Obviously Wiggins favorite move is to drive and spin in the post. He utilized his spin move frequently to get past his post defender. While it seems to be an effective move, Wiggins did lose his handle on the ball a couple of times and looked as though he was going too fast for his own good. Regardless, he was a capable finisher as he recovered the ball each time.

Wiggins offensive game, at least during this game, seemed limited to slashing and posting. While one might think that is exactly where a 6-8 guy should be, in looking at Wiggins, he projects to be a small forward in every sense of the word. His thin frame and his actions on the court just don?t say "post player" to me. Wiggins seems most comfortable catching the ball from 15 feet and attacking the rim with one or two dribbles, and frankly, nobody seemed able to stop him. His ability to get to the rim, as well as make shots, was evident, partly because he rises so much higher than everyone else and he just got the ball into the basket even when it looked like a tough shot.

Wiggins took two jump shots, both reminiscent of Kendall Marshall - need I say more. I am not sure he can shoot, but in this game, it looked to me that he has limited perimeter skills. His ball handling didn?t quite match up with that of a perimeter player, and certainly is something he is going to need to work on at the next level.

Something that I was very impressed with was Wiggins ability to play within the offense. A lot of times, players of his ability tend to dominate the ball and force shots. Wiggins played his team?s offense and was a willing passer. He didn?t force any action and let the game come to him. He was content with running the plays and giving the ball up, even if it meant not being involved in the score on any given possession. Obviously he trusts his teammates, and why not, they are pretty good. Xavier Rathan-Mayes, a FSU bound combo guard looked pretty solid, and their big kid, Moses Kingsley, while a bit raw, was incredibly active and simply too big for Cape Henry.

Defensively, there was not much to look at. Any time Wiggins man was off the ball, he stood up straight and floated around the floor as if he couldn?t be bothered to defend. When his man had the ball in his hands, Wiggins would only "perk-up" if he felt his man was going to drive. On drives, Wiggins did show some life and an ability to guard the ball, although there were times his lackadaisical defense got him behind on a few drives. Overall, it seemed that if properly motivated, Wiggins can defend on the ball, but needs a lot of work understanding how to play team defense.

My biggest beef with young players today is that while their offensive skills showcase them into the spotlight, it is their ability to defend that will make them truly unique and valuable at the next level. I would love to have seen Wiggins play all out on this end of the floor and show me something about his mentality. He did not and that was very disappointing, especially from someone that is proclaimed to be the next surefire franchise player.

When I look at him in comparison to a guy like Jabari Parker, they are a contrast in styles. Parker is an athletic, perimeter skilled player in the Paul Pierce mode, but clearly not as explosive as Andrew Wiggins. Parker is a much better perimeter player at this point, with a smooth-as-silk shot and excellent ball handling skills. Wiggins looks to be better down low and as a slasher - a Shawn Marion type, with super quick jumping ability [not that he has an ugly shot like Marion, just comparing his jumping ability]. Yet from one game [for both guys] it is difficult to discern that much of a difference between the two to outright claim that Wiggins is the next LeBron James.

At the next level, Wiggins is going to need to improve parts of his game in order to keep pace with all of the hype surrounding him. He needs to dramatically improve his perimeter skills, including his ball handling and his outside shot. While he is currently able to dominate on the high school level utilizing his athleticism, that advantage often disappears against top notch ACC caliber players [that was a little wishful thinking that he will go to UNC]. He also needs to begin to covet the defensive end of the court, as his success there will truly dictate whether he is going to be simply an offensive player, or a true superstar.

From what little I saw, I am not quite as impressed as the hype surrounding him suggests I should be. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed, but I didn?t see the next LeBron. I saw a great high school player, but not someone I would start mortgaging my future for. Granted, he might have had an off game , but if that is the case, what an off game he had [28 points, 8 boards on 10-14 from the field]. Much like the hype surrounding Harrison Barnes, I did not see the game to match. Not that Barnes, or Wiggins, aren?t going to be great players, but I see a number of weaknesses in their games that will hinder their progress. The telling sign is a willingness to work to improve the parts of their games that just aren?t quite there.

The Hyper-Efficient TWIKE Human-Electric Hybrid Vehicle ...

? Christine Lepisto

Search the internet for ?human-electric hybrid? and you will see some prototypes of cars, and many attempts at powered bikes or enclosed scooters. But where is the dreamer?s sustainable vehicle: a weather-proof car that can carry two, compete with fossil-fueled traffic, and provide the opportunity to get a workout while extending our range?

Would it surprise you to learn that there is one such vehicle on the market, available for sale today, street legal in Europe and North America? And that this vehicle is approaching 20 years of road-proven use by hundreds of sustainable-vehicle fans who have made the leap to a completely new lifestyle with a human-electric hybrid?

TWIKE sells the only human-electric hybrid currently mass-produced: vehicle number 1000 recently rolled off the assembly line. We visited the factory to get the answers to the existential questions regarding the future of human power in hybrid vehicles:

  • What value does pedal-power add to a vehicle that must compete with traffic and over typical commuting distances?
  • Is an HPV/EV hybrid the world's best city car?
  • What are the challenges when you take a TWIKE on tour?
  • What is the lowest cost per mile that can be hyper-miled out of a TWIKE?
  • Can people improve their fitness with an HPV/EV Hybrid?
  • Is there still a place for a 20-year old human-powered EV design in a world where Teslas command the "EV sportscar" headlines and most major car manufacturers have an EV on or coming to the market? And closely related, is the EV trend killing human-powered vehicles (HPVs)?

Introduction to the TWIKE

? Christine Lepisto

TWIKE met its market for the first time at the 1986 Vancouver World Expo, winning the "functionality award" for best ergonomic design in the innovative vehicle design competition. The unique joystick control keeps legroom free for pedaling as the driver "floats" over the roadway on the single front wheel, earning TWIKE drivers the nickname "pilots". The company offers a training course, TWIKE to Fly, in which potential customers or adventurous vacationers can earn a TWIKE driver's license qualifying them to rent a TWIKE .

? Christine Lepisto
German engineering: TWIKE fulfills vehicle inspection standards.

The TWIKE was developed and produced initially in Switzerland, but production moved to Germany after the initial TWIKE investors became insolvent (2002) and a group of German importers joined together to purchase the equipment and continue TWIKE production under the company FINE Mobile.

? Christine Lepisto
Twike's body withstands UV-radiation without deterioration.

TWIKE lucked out a bit by adopting Luran-S for the body material. BASF was pitching the plastic for automotive applications due to the fact that it can be recycled to material of equal value to the starting plastic (no downcycling). It turns out the material has weathered the years well, proving highly UV-resistant so that even unpainted older models look as good as new.

Direct Drive Pedal Power

? Christine Lepisto Wolfgang M?scheid explains the direct drive.

At the TWIKE factory, a group of dedicated individuals work at fulfilling a vision more than merely running a business. The person with whom we had contact was Wolfgang M?scheid, who (dare I say?) could be called the spiritual leader at TWIKE. A man who believes in what he does, the energy and conviction he contributes to TWIKE adds soul to the company, and animates him as he explains the pedal power concept used by TWIKE.

? Christine Lepisto
TWIKE's enclosed bike chain drive requires little maintenance.

Although there is talk of changing to a pedal-powered generator in future versions, the current TWIKE relies on direct drive pedal power. That means when you pedal, you feel connected to the motion of your vehicle, a motive force rather than a mere passenger.

But that feeling hides a dangerous illusion. This is no bike. Even two people could barely move it by pedal power alone. And as the TWIKE picks up speed in EV mode, you have to pedal harder to feel as though you are not spinning in the air. At such speeds, eventually you will break a sweat, requiring you to give up your precious gain in energy by turning on a ventilator fan to keep the windshield from fogging up.

? Christine Lepisto
TWIKE ventilators have recently been upgraded, newer on right.

World's Best City Car?

In fact, M?scheid enthuses that the best way to drive a TWIKE is to pedal just below a sweat-inducing speed. In the city, where cars can move barely faster than bicycle speed, the TWIKE finds its element. Driver and passenger arrive at their destination exhilarated but not stinky; range extends to up to 200 km (124 miles) at such lower speeds.

Even if your commute currently covers miles of highway, changing to a slower alternative route more optimized for the TWIKE could bring you to your desk filled with the joy of a peaceful cruise away from the rush hour madness.

TWIKE on Tour

? Christine Lepisto Two battery packs worth of Lithium Ion cells.

Faster speeds quickly drain the batteries, but that has not stopped TWIKEs on tours. Whether out of desire to prove this new sustainable transportation concept, or purely for the love of travel, TWIKE aficionados have cruised high and low in their three-wheelers. A top speed of 85 km/h (55 mph) enables the TWIKE to take to the highway, although the road less traveled will always be the preferred route. By pedaling, the touring range can be increased from 5 to 20%, the perfect road game for those with a hypermiler inclination.

M?scheid explains how he uses the LEMnet to identify recharge points along his planned route. He looks for a refueling point about every 125 km (75 miles) for a sufficient safety net to ensure the TWIKE does not run out of power in the still sparse landscape of EV-charging opportunities.

Of Fitness and Efficiency

TWIKE lacks a lot of the convenience of the modern car. Sure you get to sit side-by-side with a passenger, and a small amount of cargo can be stowed behind the seats in the battery compartment. Sure you can drive fast enough to take even the famous German autobahn. But when you start to consider that a pretty stripped TWIKE, unpainted but with a full load of 5 Li-Ion battery packs, will lighten your wallet by almost ?40,000, you need to get creative with the cost accounting.

? Christine Lepisto
TWIKE floor reinforcement -- an option you don't need.

Of course, you are paying for most of the fuel costs of the vehicle life cycle up front. Almost half the price comes from the Lithium ion battery packs alone. The batteries are expensive, true, but you get what you pay for: the battery quality ensures a long life with consistent performance and stable recharge cycles, guaranteed. The Lithium Ion battery packs can also be augmented as you can afford them, unlike Nickel cadmium battery packs. You could save ?10,000 on initial purchase price by starting out with the minimum set of 2 LiIon battery packs.

A user-friendly TWIKE price calculator makes the cost of options transparent.

A true hypermiler could keep the energy use as low as 4kWh per 100 km (62 miles), the lower end of the rated 4 - 8 kWh/100 km which equates to approximately ?1-2 per 100 km at the mid-2012 average household cost of electricity in Germany. Over 100,000 km (62,000 miles), savings of over ?10,000 euros could be realized (assuming 7L/100km or 34mpg. Of course, gas in Europe costs over $8/gallon, so the benefit of a TWIKE in America would be less.) Add a few pennies to the "entertainment" column of the budget sheet; after all, how much will you save on amusement parks while "flying" your TWIKE through the countryside?

Also, with not too much creativity, you can calculate in a cost benefit for the extra years of health to be enjoyed due to the fitness factor. Driving a TWIKE could also help fight those extra pounds, with a small proviso: in one of many forthright explanations we received at the factory, M?scheid reminds of the discipline needed to avoid snacking during recharging breaks while on tour.

WAVE/Screen capture

TWIKE in the Era of Tesla

TWIKEs have established their credentials in such competitions as the World Advanced Vehicle Expedition (WAVE) rally from Genoa (Italy) to Amsterdam (The Netherlands) in 2012, where TWIKE tied with a Tesla for 1st place (and TWIKE team 2 took 2nd). A newer development of the TWIKE, the TW4XP, cruised to a respectable third place in the Progressive Automotive X Prize.

So will human-electric hybrids someday be as commonplace in traffic as bikes and scooters? Logically, it makes perfect sense: fitness, efficiency, sustainability...all in one tidy transportation package. But then reality seeps back in at the edges of the dream: Bikes and scooters cost a heckuva lot less than a TWIKE. Just how peeved will the drivers stuck behind a hypermiling TWIKE be? And where will the dog sit?

In the end, we predict that most people will stick with what they know. As electric vehicles increase in popularity, they will replace fossil-fuel vehicles one for one; there will be no new vision, no new ground-up infrastructure design that enables the dream pioneered at TWIKE. But for the few, the adventurous, the committed fans, TWIKE offers a truly unique mode of transport. Twenty years of development have produced a gem of a design that offers a thrilling joystick-controlled glide through the countryside, which will help TWIKE remain strong in the human-electric hybrid niche market.

Giving and receiving criticism in writing | The Silicon Underground

Internet pal Rob O?Hara wrote last week about why he hasn?t published a book in five years. The resulting discussion has the potential to get ugly?not that I think it will, but the potential is there. Writing about writing, and criticizing writing, is difficult.

I don?t have the solution?I can just tell you it?s difficult.

As part of my job, I do a lot of writing and editing about security. I?m supposed to be a security analyst first and a writer second or even third, but things didn?t quite work out that way. I hesitate to say any of this, but one of the reasons was one of the other writers. He or she would write sentences without nouns, or write them without verbs, or if by some miracle a sentence did end up with both a noun and a verb in a sentence, the syntax was so unorthodox as to make the sentence sound like Yoda from Star Wars. Only somehow less endearing.

One day, I decided to try to be helpful and I suggested that words that end in ?-ed? are an indicator of passive voice. I even demonstrated how to use Word?s search function to locate words ending in ?-ed.? The next document I got had the same problems as any other, plus every single word that ended with ?-ed? was replaced with a synonym that did not. This of course accomplished nothing; sentences that weren?t passive at all got changed for no reason, and anything that was passive before was still passive, just harder to find.

One afternoon, after I?d had more than a full day of editing this stuff, I confided in a coworker who has also worked as a technical writer and who attended the same college I did. ?I don?t play guitar,? I said. ?I have no talent. But I think after a week of lessons, I could be a better guitar player than this person is a writer, but it?s not worth it, because I?d still be a lousy guitar player. But how do I tell this person that??

This coworker, who actually is a good guitarist in addition to being a gifted writer, smiled a wry smile and said, ?Next time, just say, ?You suck.??

I didn?t. A few days later, the point became moot when layoffs reduced my team from a trio to a solo act.

It?s hard to criticize writing even when it?s really bad, let alone when the biggest problem is that you tried to read it and just couldn?t get into it.

I know, because I know how it feels to receive the criticism. I had a former co-author deliver basically the same two-word insult to me, when the biggest ?problem? with my writing was that my two biggest influences were someone other than Jerry Pournelle and A. A. Milne, and I didn?t (and still don?t) make my major influences so blatantly obvious.

After a couple of ?screw you? messages back and forth, we never spoke again. I?ve never written about it, because I didn?t want word to get back to him. I suppose at this point I shouldn?t care even if it did.

It?s harder when it happens between friends who want to remain friends, when speaking your mind might mean saying something you?ll regret later.

I?m still no good at giving criticism, so I have no advice to give there. In my experience, it doesn?t matter how carefully you tread; you?re likely to hurt feelings. I read somewhere once that it takes seven compliments to counter just a single negative reaction, so heaven help the writer if someone else out of the eight also fails to deliver a compliment.

If my last review is true, I?m better at receiving it now than I used to be. Then again, my approach at work is generally to accept a change unless it makes the work measurably worse, or if the improvement doesn?t measure up to the effort the change would require.

I?m not sure that?s the best approach all the time, but it generally keeps my boss happy.

When it comes to my writing outside of work, a quote from one of my influences seems appropriate. Years ago, in a radio interview, the British singer/songwriter Elvis Costello said, ?Not everyone?s going to like everything you do. And that isn?t the goal.?

Frequently when I try something I haven?t tried before, I get that reaction. Some people like it, but invariably someone doesn?t. That?s when I need to remember that quote. After all, the way we grow isn?t by continuing to do what we?re already good at. It?s when we experiment and try something different that we grow.

Hopefully the guy who didn?t like the last experiment will give you another chance, and you?ll do better the next time.

Patrick Dempsey wins legal bid for coffee company

Patrick Dempsey's bid to buy coffee chain Tully's has been approved.

The 'Grey's Anatomy' actor outbid competitors including Starbucks to buy the Seattle based chain through his company Global Baristas LLC earlier this month and after a legal objection, federal judge Karen Overstreet ruled that the initial auction was fair and no mistakes had been made

Patrick said.''I've been deeply humbled by the outpouring of support from the city of Seattle and am very proud to be a new business owner in this amazing city. We have a lot to accomplish over the next few months and years, and I am excited to now call Seattle my second home.''

Declaring victory over Starbucks on Twitter previously, he wrote: ''We met the green monster, looked her in the eye, and...SHE BLINKED! We got it! Thank you Seattle! (sic).''

He added: ''I'm thrilled that we won and I'm even more excited about saving Tully's Coffee and its hundreds of jobs.''

Tully's Coffee, which also has stores in Washington and California, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October.

AgriNurture Inc., teamed up with Starbucks for a combined bid of $10.6 million, but Patrick's company bought the chain for $9.2 million.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NBC journalist David Gregory won't face charges for displaying a high-capacity ammunition magazine on his "Meet the Press" news program last month, District of Columbia prosecutors announced Friday.

The city's Office of the Attorney General, which handles low-level crimes, said criminal charges wouldn't serve the public's best interests even though possession of the magazine ? capable of holding up to 30 rounds of ammunition ? was clearly against local gun laws.

"Influencing our judgment in this case, among other things, is our recognition that the intent of the temporary possession and short display of the magazine was to promote the First Amendment purpose of informing an ongoing public debate about firearms policy in the United States, especially while this subject was foremost in the minds of the public" after the Connecticut school massacre and President Barack Obama's address to the nation, D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan wrote a lawyer for NBC.

Still, Nathan said, there were other legal ways to prove the point and that "there is no doubt of the gravity of the illegal conduct in this matter, especially in a city and a nation that have been plagued by carnage from gun violence." He said it was a "very close decision" to not bring charges.

Firearms laws in the nation's capital generally restrict the possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines, such as the one Gregory said he was holding up during a Dec. 23 interview, regardless of whether they're attached to a firearm. Punishment can carry up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.

D.C. police say NBC asked for permission to use the clip during a segment and was advised that it would be illegal, though NBC has said it received conflicting guidance from other law enforcement sources.

Gregory held up the magazine as a prop during an interview on gun control with Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association.

"Here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets. Now, isn't it possible that if we got rid of these, if we replaced them and said, 'Well, you can only have a magazine that carries five bullets or ten bullets,' isn't it just possible that we could reduce the carnage in a situation like Newtown?" Gregory asked, referring to the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

LaPierre replied: "I don't believe that's going to make one difference. There are so many different ways to evade that even if you had that" ban.

Police began investigating after the program aired and recently referred its findings to the attorney general's office.

The NRA couldn't immediately be reached for comment Friday.

However, NRA president David Keene told CNN last month that he didn't believe Gregory should be prosecuted for what he called a "silly felony."

"I do think it illustrates the craziness of some of these laws," Keene said at the time.

Gregory, a longtime correspondent, was named "Meet the Press" moderator in 2008. The program is generally taped in Washington.

"Meet the Press" issued a statement Friday that said: "We displayed the empty magazine solely for journalistic purposes to help illuminate an important issue for our viewers. We accept the District of Columbia Attorney General's admonishment, respect his decision and will have no further comment on this matter."

Nate Silver on Using Test Scores to Evaluate Teachers [SLIDE ...

One of the hottest statistical minds in the world right now is Nate Silver, the mind behind the FiveThirtyEight blog which is dedicated to helping readers to "cut through the clutter of this data-rich world."?

Silver rose to prominence initially by using algorithms to correctly predict the winner of 49 out of 50 states in the 2008 presidential election.? He's gone on to become one of the most respected voices on the use of data to drive decisions.

Yesterday, Silver participated in an online IAmA Blogger Q+A session over at Reddit -- and the first question that he was asked was whether or not he believed that using standardized test scores to determine a teacher's value was a responsible decision.

Silver's response was worth sharing with every parent and educational policymaker you know:

?

Now to be fair, Silver DOES say that he'd need to give the topic a much longer look before he'd be able to make any real decisions on using test scores to evaluate teachers.?

But his initial hunch that using test scores as the most important measure of a teacher's effectiveness is an example of using data badly aligns nicely with the thinking of other really bright minds working BEYOND education -- including Bill Gates (see here and here), Dan Pink (see here) and Chip and Dan Heath (see here).

And as Liz Dwyer points out on the Good Education blog, Silver's hunch on testing as a tool for holding teachers accountable also aligns nicely with REAMS of studies already completed by everyone from The National Research Council and the president of Math for America to respected senior scholars like Richard Rothstein.

Finally, Silver's initial hunch ALSO aligns nicely with the opinions of the very companies that make the standardized tests that are strangling education in our country, who have noted time-and-again that their products were never designed to be used to draw conclusions about individual teachers.?

So if there is a broad consensus starting to form that using test scores to evaluate teachers is a bad idea, then why do policymakers -- including President Obama and his Education Secretary, Arne Duncan -- keep pushing for these failed policies?

That's a question that every person you vote for should be forced to answer.
