Mortgage Debt at Lowest Level Since 2006, Despite Increase in Originations

Despite a sizeable increase in consumer debt overall household debt fell by $74 billion in the third quarter of 2012, driven largely by a decrease in mortgage and home equity loan balances. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit reported that a drop of $120 billion in mortgage debt and $16 billion in home equity lines of credit were partially offset by a 2.3 percent increase in non-real estate obligations.

The drop in aggregate consumer debt continued a near-four year downward trend.? At of the end of the quarter (September 30) total consumer indebtedness was $11.31 trillion, 0.7 percent lower than in the second quarter and $1.37 trillion less than the peak household debt hit in the third quarter of 2008.

Mortgage debt, the largest component of the aggregate, now stands at $8.03 trillion, down 1.5 percent from the previous quarter and the lowest level since 2006.? The decline has come in spite of the fourth consecutive increase in mortgage originations with $521 billion in new mortgage debt appearing on consumer credit reports.?

The other major components of debt increased.? Student loan debt increased by $42 billion to $956 billion.? The Federal Reserve reports, however, that of the $42 billion only $23 billion is new debt while the remaining $19 billion is attributed to previously defaulted student loans that have been updated on credit reports this quarter, increasing the 90+ day delinquency rate for student loans to 11 percent.

Outstanding balances on auto loans increased by $18 billion to $768 billion, the highest level in nearly four years and the sixth quarter this debt has increased.? Originations increased by 4.4 percent to $85.8 billion, the third consecutive quarterly increase.????????

Credit card balances were up $2 billion while aggregate credit card limits were down 0.3 percent or $9 billion during the quarter.? There are 382 million open credit card accounts, down slightly from the second quarter, while the number of credit inquiries decreased by one million to 167 million over a rolling six month period.

"The increase in mortgage originations, auto loans and credit card balances suggests that consumers are slowly gaining confidence in their financial position," said Donghoon Lee, senior economist at the New York Fed. "As consumers feel more comfortable, they may start to make purchases that were previously delayed."

Overall, delinquency rates improved slightly in the third quarter to 8.9 percent of outstanding debt compared to 9.0 percent in the second quarter.? This equates to about $1.01 trillion of delinquent debt, approximately $740 billion of which is seriously delinquent, i.e. 90+ days past due.

The percentage of auto loan debt that is seriously delinquent was unchanged at 4.2 percent while student loan debt, as noted above, rose to 11 percent.? Delinquency rates for mortgages decreased from 6.3 percent to 5.9 percent and new foreclosures are returning to their pre-crisis levels with new foreclosure notices added to 242,000 consumer credit reports. This was the lowest number in nearly six years.? Home equity lines of credit delinquencies remain high by historical standards at 4.9 percent.

Delinquency transition rates for current mortgage accounts were roughly unchanged, with 1.9% of current mortgage balances transitioning into delinquency. However, the rate of transition from early (30-60 days) into serious (90 days or? more) delinquency increased to 26.3%, up by 2.8 percentage points from the second quarter. ?Furthermore, the cure rate - the share of balances that transitioned from 30-60 days delinquent to current - saw a second consecutive decline to 26.4%.

About 354,000 consumers had a bankruptcy notation added to their credit reports in 2012Q3, a 16.3% drop from the same quarter last year, and the seventh consecutive drop in bankruptcies on a year-over-year basis.

New organization hopes to deliver debt relief to many Americans

It may surprise many people to learn that the Occupy Wall Street movement has paved the way for several offshoot organizations, including one that will likely earn the praise of many debt-saddled Americans.

Known as Strike Debt, the organization hopes to provide debt relief in a novel way: By purchasing debts from collection agencies and, instead of trying to collect on them, simply erasing them for consumers.

"Basically what we're going to do is exactly the same as what a regular debt buyer would do, with one big difference," said Thomas G., a member of the organization. "Rather than collect the debt, we're just going to abolish it."

Online fundraising for the organization has already brought in more than $129,000, enough to purchase $2.5 million in defaulted loans. When those debts are purchased, the organization will issue a certified letter informing certain lucky individuals that their debt has been wiped away.

In addition to purchasing debts and erasing them, the organization is seeking to empower consumers in their battle against debt.

To that end, it has released the Debt Resistors' Operations Manual, which provides guidance on how to battle creditors and a broader understanding of how the credit industry actually works.

One of the leaders of the organization said they were leery of the reception they were going to get from professional debt buyers, but that the vast majority of them proved to be supportive of the movement.

"I said, look, we're revolutionaries, you might not like what we're trying to do," said Thomas G. "And they said, 'Well, I've got kids; they're going to college; they're winding up massively in debt.' So they said they'd be happy to help us get started."

The group has revealed that its first purchases will be focused on medical debt. After that, it will move on to purchasing tuition debt, and then credit card debt.

While the organization is ambitious about its potential, it concedes that not even the most optimistic forecasts have it coming anywhere close erasing the $11 trillion dollars collectively owed by Americans.

What are your thoughts on what Strike Debt is doing?

HP alleges Autonomy wrongdoing, takes $8.8 billion charge

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co stunned Wall Street by alleging a massive accounting scandal at its British software unit Autonomy and taking an $8.8 billion writedown, the latest in a string of reversals that renewed questions about the competence of the storied company's board and senior managers.

HP said on Tuesday it discovered "serious accounting improprieties" and "a willful effort by Autonomy to mislead shareholders," after a whistleblower came forward following the May ouster of former Autonomy Chief Executive Mike Lynch.

The news sent the company's shares plunging 12 percent to a 10-year low of $11.71. HP, which for decades was synonymous with technical excellence and innovation as one of the bedrock companies of Silicon Valley, now has a market value of roughly $20 billion, down from $155 billion in April of 2000.

CEO Meg Whitman took the helm at HP a little over a year ago when her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, was fired after less than a year on the job. Apotheker's one big strategic move during his brief tenure was the $11 billion acquisition of Autonomy, intended to hasten HP's transformation into a software and services company but criticized by many analysts as over-priced.

"Most of the board was here and voted for this deal, and we feel terribly about that," Whitman said on a call with analysts.

Tuesday's announcement came just three months after the company took a write-down of almost $11 billion on its EDS services division.

HP has for years relied on deal-making, acquiring businesses ranging from EDS to Compaq to Palm, but has largely failed to articulate a clear strategy or establish a strong position in growth businesses like computer services or mobile computing.

"To put it bluntly ... this story has been an unmitigated train wreck, and it seems every time management speaks to the Street, there is new negative incremental information forthcoming," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall.

HP said it has referred the alleged accounting wrongdoing at Autonomy to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division and the UK's Serious Fraud Office for civil and criminal investigation. HP also said it would take legal action to recoup "what we can for our shareholders."

Both agencies declined to comment.

Lynch, in an interview with Reuters, "flatly rejected" HP's allegations and said he was "shocked" but confident he would be absolved of any misdeeds. The Irish-born executive said he had not been notified by HP about the allegation before it was made public, nor had he been contacted by any authorities.

Whitman said the investigation of Autonomy's finances - both external and internal - will take multiple years as it wends it way through the courts in both countries.

She defended the board's handling of the acquisition and blamed HP's auditors for failing to detect the problems.

"The board relied on audited financials, audited by Deloitte. Not Brand X accounting firm, but Deloitte," she said, adding that KPMG was hired to audit Deloitte.

"Neither of them saw what we now see after someone came forward to point us in the right direction," Whitman said.

The alleged accounting issues also put a spotlight on the investment banks and law firms involved in the acquisition.

Autonomy was represented by Frank Quattrone, an investment banker who was the target of widespread criticism - and criminal prosecution - for his activities during the first dot-com boom. After one trial ended in a hung jury and a second ended in a guilty verdict that was overturned on appeal, the charges were ultimately dropped.

HP's lead advisor was Perella Weinberg, a boutique investment bank with little experience in big tech deals. Its attorneys included the blue-chip firms Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Drinker Biddle & Reath; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which advised the board.

INFLATED SALES, REVENUE

Whitman on Tuesday stood by Autonomy's technology and products, saying the unit would still be the growth engine for HP. The sprawling company, which employs more than 300,000 people globally, aims to focus more on enterprise services in the mold of International Business Machines Corp.

But the former eBay CEO and California gubernatorial candidate has yet to overcome years of management turmoil and strategic missteps, including a plan to sell the personal computer unit that was later dropped.

HP disclosed the Autonomy allegations in conjunction with its fourth-quarter earnings, which showed a 6.7 percent decline in revenues as well as a $6.85 billion loss.

It took $8.8 billion in charges in the quarter, with over $5 billion tied to the problems at Autonomy. The rest of the charge related to the "recent trading value of HP stock and headwinds against anticipated synergies and marketplace performance," HP said without elaborating.

HP has since embarked on an internal investigation, including a forensic review of Autonomy's historical results by PricewaterhouseCoopers and HP General Counsel John Schultz.

It accuses Autonomy's former management of inflating revenue and gross margins to mislead potential buyers. It said Autonomy executives mischaracterized revenue from low-end hardware sales as software sales and booked some licensing deals with partners as revenue, even though no customer bought products.

It said Autonomy claimed its gross margins were in the 40 to 45 percent range while realistically they were in the 28 to 30 percent range.

Moreover, Autonomy always represented itself as a software firm but 10 percent to 15 percent of its revenue came from money-losing sales of low-end hardware, HP said.

The company also claimed that Autonomy was booking licensing revenue upfront before deals closed.

Schultz said since the accounting troubles occurred prior to the acquisition of Autonomy, it took a long time before HP was in a position to make the news public.

"Not surprisingly, Autonomy did not have sitting on a shelf somewhere a set of well-maintained books that would walk you through what was actually happening from a financial perspective inside the company," he said. "Indeed critical documents were missing from the obvious places, and it required that we look in every nook and cranny."

Yet there had been rumblings in the industry for years that Autonomy's results might not be quite what they seemed.

As early as 2009, hedge fund manager Jim Chanos had identified Autonomy as a shorting opportunity, according to a source familiar with his views.

Chief among his concerns, according to the source, was that Autonomy was claiming a 40 percent market share against the likes of Microsoft Corp, International Business Machines Corp and EMC Corp in the field of e-discovery.

Autonomy's stated margins of around 50 percent did not seem to translate proportionately into cash flow; and it was reporting double-digit organic growth in software license revenue while rivals battled shrinking sales, the person said.

During a presentation a few weeks ago entitled ?Faking Reported Income 101' at the Santangel's Investor Forum in New York, hedge fund manager John Hempton of Sydney, Australia-based Bronte Capital highlighted items on Autonomy's balance sheet that raised his concerns.

"Is it odd that in a software company you have receivables of 4.5 months? Or that deferred revenue is under half receivables?" asked Hempton, who has a short position on HP.

Last year, software firm Oracle Corp said it had looked at Autonomy but passed on it.

Whitman said Tuesday that her predecessor, Apotheker, and former Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Shane Robison were the key people behind the Autonomy acquisition. Robison left shortly after Apotheker was ousted in September 2010.

In a statement, Apotheker said he was "stunned and disappointed" by the revelations and offered to help HP and the authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

Robert Enderle, a tech analyst at the Enderle Group, said he has never seen such a potential misrepresentation of financials.

"You have to rely on what the firm gives you during due diligence and I've never seen a misstatement at this level," Enderle said.

If the charges are true, it could result in a massive punitive damages award for HP, Enderle said.

Other analysts hoped it was the end of the bad news for HP.

"This kind of feels like the last of the bad news," Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said.

In announcing its quarterly results, HP said net revenue fell 6.7 percent to $29.96 billion for the quarter ended October 31, from $32.12 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had expected $30.43 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue from all of its main business units declined, with the personal computer division recording the steepest drop, at 14 percent, while revenue from printing fell 5 percent.

HP reported a quarterly net loss of $6.85 billion, or $3.49 a share, versus a profit of $239 million, or 12 cents, a year earlier.

Planet 'devoured in secret' by its own sun

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? A planet roughly 1.4 times the size of Jupiter is being consumed by its own star behind a shroud thanks to a magnesium veil absorbing all of certain light wavelengths, according to new observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

WASP-12 b, originally spotted in 2008, is a gas giant planet orbiting extremely close to its parent star. The distance between the star and planet is so small that the planet completes an orbit of its star in just over one Earth day. This proximity has "boiled off" a superheated gas cloud roughly three times the radius of Jupiter which feeds the star. However, some of this gas is moving out towards interstellar space, creating a shroud around the star.

The gas shroud is thin, and barely noticeable in optical light, but the new observations were made with HST using near-UV light. The team discovered that one element in the cloud is magnesium, which is extremely efficient at absorbing near-UV light. These wavelengths are extremely sensitive to the presence of tenuous gas, and in them the star can appear completely invisible.

The study was made by researchers from the UK's Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) consortium, who originally found the planet in 2008, as well experts on the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the HST, stellar activity, and interstellar absorption from the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy at the University of Colorado.

Senior Lecturer in Astronomy at The Open University Dr Carole Haswell, who led the study, said that a structure like this had never before been observed around a star, adding: "It's as though a veil has been drawn over the planet's demise."

EyeSee mannequins used to spy on shoppers, confirm paranoid fears

DNP Bionic mannequins used to spy on shoppers, confirms paranoid fears

If you feel like you're being watched when you're shopping, you might be right. Some stores, like the ones owned by Benetton Group SpA, have set up EyeSee mannequins that have a camera embedded into one eye. It then feeds data into facial-recognition software, and would log age, gender and race of the people it sees. The original rationale of such technology was to identify criminals in places like the airport, but retailers are apparently now using it to personalize store offerings. For example, one store found that a lot of shoppers after 4 pm were Asian, so it placed Chinese-speaking staff by the entrance at that time. Made by Italian mannequin maker Almax SpA, the EyeSee went on sale last December and is currently in use in three European countries as well as the US, though major chains like Nordstrom and Burberry have publicly stated they have not implemented them. Future mannequins might even have the ability to "eavesdrop" on passers-by, allowing store owners to hear what they have to say about the mannequin's outfit. It's not quite as unnerving as see-through security cams and that Japanese android mannequin, but it'll still make us avoid a mannequin's stare the next time we head to the shops.

So I recently got back online here after a very long absence. Long story short, technology dies frequently in my home. Recently I picked up a Galaxy SIII and got to thinking... Why isn't there a WrongPlanet app for smartphones? A mobile friendly app for this site so that everyone can access the site's news, forum discussions, the works. If I had any knowledge for app creation, I'd be on making it. I just thought it could be cool if one was made? Maybe it was already made? Any thoughts?

More Than A Mum ? #supportafriend

We have blogged a number of times before in support of Refuge and their 1 in 4 campaign.? The #dontcoveritup video was amazingly powerful and definitely gave us food for thought.? Their latest video is an interactive one, intended to help us all support a friend in a domestic violence relationship.

It is again powerful stuff.? It gives us the key facts ? 1 in 4 women suffer domestic violence; 2 women die every week at the hands of a partner or ex-partner.? It gives us key signs of how to spot a friend who may need support due to domestic violence and then it asks a series of questions to which you can answer yes or no and from which choices you are given advice about domestic violence and how best to support someone who is in a violent relationship.

As always the most important fact that Refuge highlight is the fact that letting people know that they are supported is the most important thing you can do.? Letting them know that charities like Refuge exist and can help is one of the key steps to this.? That is why we want to share the video with you and ask you to watch it and share it.

Talking about domestic violence and it?s prevelance is one of the ways to combat it.? The more that we say that domestic violence is not OK; the more we discuss it and stop it from being a taboo subject, the more we can help women and men who suffer at the hands of a partner.

Please watch and share this video and help support Refuge?s campaign.

Syrian rebels say they seize base on Damascus outskirts

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels said they had seized the headquarters of an army battalion near the southern gate of Damascus on Monday, the nearest military base to the capital reported to have fallen to opposition fighters in a 20-month revolt.

Activists said the Syrian army had attacked southern districts of Damascus with shelling and rocket fire all day to try to stop the rebels seizing the base, in some of the heaviest bombardment on the capital.

"Multiple rockets launchers are just making huge, random destruction," said Rami al-Sayyed of the Syrian Media Centre, an opposition organization monitoring the crackdown by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

The Islamist rebel groups Ansar al-Islam and Jund Allah Brigades said in a statement that they had taken the Air Defence Battalion base near Hajar al-Aswad after four days of fighting.

The district had been home to thousands of refugees from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. These were at the forefront of the movement against Assad's autocratic rule at the beginning of a revolt that has now turned into a civil war, in which activists say 38,000 people have been killed.

Activists said all the residents had fled under the bombardment.

Video footage showed rebels walking through the site, past destroyed anti-aircraft guns, and one commander saying on a walkie-talkie: "We have completely seized the compound."

Independent verification of the reports was not possible because Syria severely restricts the access of foreign media.

Rebels have captured several army positions in outlying regions in the last week, including a Special Forces base near the northern city of Aleppo and a small military airport in the east, on the border with Iraq.

ROADSIDE BOMB

Inside Damascus, a roadside bomb hit a minibus along a route used by security forces and pro-government media, activists said. The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three people had killed and at least 10 wounded in the attack.

Under pressure from foreign states keen to promote a viable and responsible alternative to Assad, Syria's fractious opposition formed a broader coalition group last week, led by moderate Sunni Muslim preacher Mouaz Alkhatib.

The Syrian National Coalition was promptly recognized by France as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

EU foreign ministers said on Monday they considered the group to be "legitimate representatives" of the Syrian people, stopping just short of the full recognition offered by France.

A group of Islamist fighters in Syria's Aleppo province, many of whom are well-known members of powerful rebel units in the area, said on Monday they rejected the umbrella group and planned to establish an Islamic state in Syria.

Members of Islamist groups listed in a YouTube video as supporters of the plan told Reuters they had nothing to do with the announcement, though they acknowledged that some members of their groups had appeared in the video.

This could suggest cracks in Islamist rebel ranks over how to respond to growing efforts to unify rebel groups and potentially sideline more radical Islamist elements.

The expanding conflict has threatened to suck in Syria's neighbors, especially Turkey in the north.

Syrian mortar rounds have fallen in Turkey, Lebanon and Israel as rebels hug the borders looking for safety, and Turkey's army is stationing soldiers in recently dug trenches along the border.

REQUEST FOR MISSILE DEFENCE

Germany said Turkey was expected to formally request, perhaps within days, that NATO Patriot missiles be placed on its border to defend against Syrian attacks, Western officials said.

"There have been informal talks on a request like this in the past few days," said German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere, speaking in Brussels on the sidelines of an EU defence ministers' meeting.

Only Germany, the Netherlands and the United States have the appropriate Patriot missile system available.

De Maiziere said Berlin would study a Turkish request "with solidarity" and if Germany sent Patriot missiles to the Turkish border, German soldiers would accompany them.

A Turkish government official said Turkey was still consulting with NATO. "When a decision is reached on the Turkish side, it will be made known," the official said.

In Ankara, President Abdullah Gul told a press conference that Turkey was concerned about chemical weapons in Syria.

"Unfortunately there are some chemical weapons and launchers in Syria from the Soviet era," he said. "In this context, there will always be contingency planning in a NATO country neighboring Syria."

NATO has deployed Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Turkey twice before, once in 1991 and then in 2003, during both Gulf Wars. Those missiles were provided by the Netherlands.

Any NATO-supplied missiles would not be for creating a no-fly zone in Syria and, although Turkey could count on "allied solidarity", the missiles would be purely for defence, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in Brussels.

Syrian rebels, despite seizing swathes of land, are almost defenseless against Syria's air force and have called for an internationally enforced no-fly zone, a measure that helped Libyan rebels overthrow their long-term leader last year.

A Reuters cameraman on the Turkish border on Monday said hundreds of families had fled the Syrian town of Ras al-Ain and were gathering at a border gate after clashes between rebels and Kurdish separatists who are wary of both rebels and the government.

Petraeus is defense secretary in new ?Call of Duty? game

David Petraeus is the secretary of defense in the new Call of Duty game (Activision)Former CIA Director David Petraeus is still reeling from a recently revealed extramarital affair that may have national security repercussions, but in the video game world things are going much better for the retired four-star general.

In the new "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" game released on Tuesday, Petraeus is the newly appointed secretary of defense in the year 2025.

And that's not the only unusual bit of predicted future developments in the game from creators Activision and Treyarch. When we first meet Petraeus, he's aboard the USS Barack Obama.

Several high-profile actors have lent their talents to previous "Call of Duty" video game installments. As Kotaku reports, Petraeus in the game is voiced by actor Jim Meskimen.

Petraeus also reportedly displays some phoenix-worthy resurrection skills in the game. Early on, he is aboard Marine One with the fictional President Bosworth, a dead ringer for Hillary Clinton, when terrorists shoot down the aircraft. However, both the president and Petraeus survive the attack.

Video game developers are known to retroactively make substantial changes to their characters and plots, even after titles are released to the public. So, it will be interesting to see if Petraeus remains in the game, or is scrubbed through a software update as his real-life personal scandal continues to dominate the news headlines.

Video game analyst Michael Pachter argues that the development is actually good for game developers, telling the Hollywood Reporter that, "All incremental publicity is good." He predicts that 20 million copies of the game will be sold before the end of 2012.

Then again, this latest installment of the "Call of Duty" franchise offers a platform for another former real-life military figure whose stature was diminished in the face of scandal. Former Lt. Col. Oliver North served as an adviser on the game and even makes an appearance in a flashback cinematic sequence, where he does his own voice work.

Google Play Music now live in selected European countries

Android Central

Google Play Music services are now live in the European countries. Warner Music Group artists now available worldwide.

Today isn't just Nexus Eve, at least, not in Europe anyway. Today also sees the long awaited arrival of Google Play Music on these shores! Customers in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain can now not only make use of Google's cloud storage service -- officially, at least -- but also purchase music right from within the Google Play Store. With the recent announcement that the Warner Music Group artists joining the catalog, we've got all the major players to choose from.

That's not all though. Perhaps as reward for waiting so long, Europeans also get to try out Google's new 'iTunes match' type service. Uploading all your music to the cloud isn't going to be for everyone, and whatever your internet connection, it takes some time. With this service going live -- initially only in Europe -- there is actually a viable alternative to uploading all your music manually.

It's been a long time in coming, but a huge missing piece in Google Play's ecosystem here in Europe is finally with us. Hit us up in the comments below and let us know your thoughts and experiences with Google Play Music.

Quitting Smoking for Good - NYTimes.com

Few smokers would claim that it?s easy to quit. The addiction to nicotine is strong and repeatedly reinforced by circumstances that prompt smokers to light up.

Yet the millions who have successfully quit are proof that a smoke-free life is achievable, even by those who have been regular, even heavy, smokers for decades.

Today, 19 percent of American adults smoke, down from more than 42 percent half a century ago, when Luther Terry, the United States surgeon general, formed a committee to produce the first official report on the health effects of smoking. Ever-increasing restrictions on where people can smoke have helped to swell the ranks of former smokers.

Now, however, as we approach the American Cancer Society?s 37th Great American Smokeout on Thursday, the decline in adult smoking has stalled despite the economic downturn and the soaring price of cigarettes.

Currently, 45 million Americans are regular smokers who, if they remain smokers, can on average expect to live 10 fewer years. Half will die of a tobacco-related disease, and many others will suffer for years with smoking-caused illness. Smoking adds $96 billion to the annual cost of medical care in this country, Dr. Nancy A. Rigotti wrote in The Journal of the American Medical Association last month. Even as some adult smokers quit, their ranks are being swelled by the 800,000 teenagers who become regular smokers each year and by young adults who, through advertising and giveaways, are now the prime targets of the tobacco industry.

People ages 18 to 25 now have the nation?s highest smoking rate: 40 percent. I had to hold my breath the other day as dozens of 20-somethings streamed out of art gallery openings and lighted up. Do they not know how easy it is to get hooked on nicotine and how challenging it can be to escape this addiction?

Challenging, yes, but by no means impossible. on the Web you can download a ?Guide to Quitting Smoking,? with detailed descriptions of all the tools and tips to help you become an ex-smoker once and for all.

Or consult the new book by Dr. Richard Brunswick, a retired family physician in Northampton, Mass., who says he?s helped hundreds of people escape the clutches of nicotine and smoking. (The printable parts of the book?s provocative title are ?Can?t Quit? You Can Stop Smoking.?)

?There is no magic pill or formula for beating back nicotine addiction,? Dr. Brunswick said. ?However, with a better understanding of why you smoke and the different tools you can use to control the urge to light up, you can stop being a slave to your cigarettes.?

Addiction and Withdrawal

Nicotine beats a direct path to the brain, where it provides both relaxation and a small energy boost. But few smokers realize that the stress and lethargy they are trying to relieve are a result of nicotine withdrawal, not some underlying distress. Break the addiction, and the ill feelings are likely to dissipate.

Physical withdrawal from nicotine is short-lived. Four days without it and the worst is over, with remaining symptoms gone within a month, Dr. Brunswick said. But emotional and circumstantial tugs to smoke can last much longer.

Depending on when and why you smoke, cues can include needing a break from work, having to focus on a challenging task, drinking coffee or alcohol, being with other people who smoke or in places you associate with smoking, finishing a meal or sexual activity, and feeling depressed or upset.

To break such links, you must first identify them and then replace them with other activities, like taking a walk, chewing sugar-free gum or taking deep breaths. These can help you control cravings until the urge passes.

If you?ve failed at quitting before, try to identify what went wrong and do things differently this time, Dr. Brunswick suggests. Most smokers need several attempts before they can become permanent ex-smokers.

Perhaps most important is to be sure you are serious about quitting; if not, wait until you are. Motivation is half the battle. Also, should you slip and have a cigarette after days or weeks of not smoking, don?t assume you?ve failed and give up. Just go right back to not smoking.

Aids for Quitting

Many if not most smokers need two kinds of assistance to become lasting ex-smokers: psychological support and medicinal aids. Only about 4 percent to 7 percent of people are able to quit smoking on any given attempt without help, the cancer society says.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have free telephone-based support programs that connect would-be quitters to trained counselors. Together, you can plan a stop-smoking method that suits your smoking pattern and helps you avoid common pitfalls.

Online support groups and Nicotine Anonymous can help as well. To find a group, ask a local hospital or call the cancer society at (800) 227-2345. Consider telling relatives and friends about your intention to quit, and plan to spend time in smoke-free settings.

More than a dozen treatments can help you break the physical addiction to tobacco. Most popular is nicotine replacement therapy, sold both with and without a prescription. The Food and Drug Administration has approved five types: nicotine patches of varying strengths, gums, sprays, inhalers and lozenges that can curb withdrawal symptoms and help you gradually reduce your dependence on nicotine.

Two prescription drugs are also effective: an extended-release form of the antidepressant bupropion (Zyban or Wellbutrin), which reduces nicotine cravings, and varenicline (Chantix), which blocks nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing both the pleasurable effects of smoking and the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Combining a nicotine replacement with one of these drugs is often more effective than either approach alone.

Other suggested techniques, like hypnosis and acupuncture, have helped some people quit but lack strong proof of their effectiveness. Tobacco lozenges and pouches and nicotine lollipops and lip balms lack evidence as quitting aids, and no clinical trials have been published showing that electronic cigarettes can help people quit.

The cancer society suggests picking a ?quit day?; ridding your home, car and workplace of smoking paraphernalia; choosing a stop-smoking plan, and stocking up on whatever aids you may need.

On the chosen day, keep active; drink lots of water and juices; use a nicotine replacement; change your routine if possible; and avoid alcohol, situations you associate with smoking and people who are smoking.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic win at ATP finals

LONDON (AP) ? As usual, Roger Federer is looking to add to one of his many records. And as many expected, Novak Djokovic will be trying to stop him.

The top two players in the world advanced to the championship match at the ATP finals on Sunday, each looking beatable early before turning things around.

Federer, a six-time champion at the season-ending event, advanced by beating U.S. Open champion Andy Murray 7-6 (5), 6-2. The top-ranked Djokovic defeated Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

"I knew that if I lose today it's the end of the season, so I gave everything I had and couldn't be more happy," Federer said on court after the match.

The ATP finals is the last tournament of the season, and Federer will face Djokovic in the final match on Monday at the O2 Arena.

Federer found himself in a hole early against Murray, losing his serve in the opening game of the match. But Murray, who lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final but beat him in the Olympic final, couldn't hang on. The 17-time Grand Slam champion broke back to even the score at 4-4, and then recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the tiebreaker to win the opening set and take control of the match.

In the second set, Federer lost only two points on serve and broke Murray twice.

Once he gets ahead, he's incredibly hard to stop," said Murray, who leads Federer 10-9 in head-to-head play. "He tends to play better and better when he gets up. I feel like I gave him that advantage the beginning of the second set.."

In the early match, the top-ranked Djokovic started playing his best tennis as soon as it looked like he was headed for his offseason vacation.

Djokovic was broken late in the first set and again early in the second, but he then found his stroke and quickly rebounded.

"Well, I had a little, let's say, crisis in today's match from 4-all, first set to 2-all in the second, where I didn't feel so good on the court, struggling to find my momentum and my rhythm," Djokovic said. "So you try to be positive and push myself to fight for every point and believe I can come back. That was the case."

Del Potro took the lead late in the first set, breaking Djokovic for a 5-4 lead before serving out the set at love.

The tall Argentine, who defeated Djokovic to win the Olympic bronze medal at Wimbledon this year, then went up a break early in the second set. But Djokovic broke right back to 2-2 and then took Del Potro's serve again to take a 5-3 lead.

"He's so good," Del Potro said. "Of course, he's the No. 1. In these kinds of matches, they make the difference between them and the rest of the players."

In the third, Djokovic decided things by winning 12 of 13 points in a three-game stretch to take a 3-1 lead. He broke again three games later and held at love to advance.

"I believed that I could come back," said Djokovic, who treated the media to chocolates during his post-match news conference to thank them for work throughout the year. "I believed that I could turn this match around in my favor, and I've done so."

The victory was Djokovic's 74th of the season, tying him with David Ferrer for the most this year. It was also his seventh win in nine matches against Del Potro.

Djokovic won the ATP finals in 2008, and reached the semifinals in 2009 ? the first year the tournament was played at the O2 Arena in London.

Republicans say deal can be done on U.S. "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior Republican senator voiced confidence on Sunday that U.S. lawmakers would forge a deal on the year-end "fiscal cliff," while a top aide to President Barack Obama signaled a willingness to compromise over raising tax rates on the rich.

Republican Senator Bob Corker said increasing tax revenues from wealthier Americans would have to be part of the plan, but he stressed closing loopholes rather than raising top tax rates as many Democrats favor, provided spending is also tackled.

"I am optimistic," Corker told "Fox News Sunday." "I think there is the basis for the deal. ... There is a way of getting there on the revenue side. The real question is: can we come to terms on the entitlement side?"

Obama has invited congressional leaders to the White House on Friday to discuss the issue, with only 50 days left until the end of the year. Unless Congress acts first, $600 billion in tax hikes and automatic federal spending cuts would take effect at the end of December, with a potentially devastating impact on the economy.

The Obama administration and congressional leaders are attempting to negotiate a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, and instead work toward a deficit-reduction package in the next session of Congress that begins in January.

'SKIN THIS CAT'

Top Obama aide David Axelrod, asked if it was possible to raise enough revenue to curb the deficit without increasing the top tax rate, praised the "encouraging" remarks by Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, on the need to tackle the problem.

"Obviously, there is money to be gained by closing some of these loopholes and applying them to deficit reduction," Axelrod told CBS's "Face the Nation." "So I think there are a lot of ways to skin this cat, so long as everybody comes with a positive, constructive attitude toward the task."

Boehner last week repeated his party's commitment to not raise anyone's tax rates, but said that he would be open to a compromise that includes changes in the tax code that bring in more revenue, something fiscal conservatives in his party have argued strongly against in the past as tantamount to a tax hike.

Tax cuts first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush are due to expire at the end of the year for all Americans unless Congress acts. That would lift the top rate of income tax from the current 35 percent for households earning more than $250,000 a year to 39.6 percent.

Obama won re-election on Tuesday after a campaign in which he called for wealthier Americans to pay a bit more in taxes. But a range of deductions, including on mortgage interest payments and charitable giving, can significantly lower the effective tax rate that most affluent U.S. households pay.

'MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE'

Another influential Democrat, Senator Charles Schumer, voiced skepticism that it would be possible to raise enough revenue to lower the deficit sufficiently without lifting the tax rate on the rich, but said he is open to hearing other ideas.

"The only way mathematically that I've seen to do it, is go to that 39.6 percent rate. If someone can show another plan that doesn't do that ... we could look at it. But no one has shown one because I think it is mathematically impossible," Schumer said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Limiting some deductions while closing loopholes is the middle ground proposed in 2010 by a commission created by the president and led by Republican Alan Simpson and Democrat Erskine Bowles. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged Obama to sign on to its recommendations while pledging to do the same.

"Say 'yes' to Simpson-Bowles, Mr. President. I'm willing to say 'yes' to Simpson-Bowles. We need more revenue in Washington. We need more private sector jobs. We don't need to raise tax rates," he said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Graham also warned that no Republican will vote for higher tax rates, and that reform of entitlement programs - such as the Social Security retirement program, the Medicare health insurance program for the elderly and disabled, and the Medicaid health insurance program for the poor - must also be tackled.

"We will generate revenue from eliminating deductions and loopholes. But we will insist our Democratic friends reform entitlements. ... That is where the big money is at."

Failure to convincingly tackle the fiscal cliff could unsettled financial markets and risk another downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, while imposing a heavy burden on a fragile recovery that could even tip the economy back into recession.

Democrat Kent Conrad, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, voiced optimism that the country would avoid the fiscal cliff, and said Congress must agree on a measure that wins some time to work out a more detailed plan to overhaul the tax code and entitlement programs.

"You can't settle every detail in these next few weeks. What you can do is agree on a framework agreement that sets out for the (congressional) committees of jurisdiction how much they need to save, how much money needs to be raised," Conrad said on "Fox News Sunday."
