10 reasons authors SHOULD make face-to-face networking a priority

10 reasons authors SHOULD make face-to-face networking a?priority

10 reasons authors SHOULD make face-to-face networking a priority

Since we?ve been talking a bit about networking the last couple of posts, I decided to do a series of posts on the subject. You may groan, thinking I?m an author ? what possible benefits could there be for me in networking? Or you may already be a fairly stellar networker, in which case, perhaps you could add your own thoughts to these posts in the comments section. The fact is that unless you are trained to do it well, you may not (a) see the value of networking, (b) do it very well, or (c) find it as highly beneficial as it could be. Our goal with this series is to help you correct those issues.

According to virtually every marketing expert, face-to-face meetings have the highest value in terms of making connections and building your sphere of influence. Yes, there?s a limit to the number of people you can meet, but that should not deter you from making the effort. The following are 10 reasons you, as an author, should make the effort to do some regular face-to-face networking.

  1. Get out from behind the keyboard.?As you?re no doubt aware, writing is an isolated profession. Sure, you can hit your favorite coffeehouse for some socialization, but sitting amid a bunch of noisy strangers is not really the same as creating meaningful conversations and connections. Regular networking gives those of us who spend a lot of time alone the chance to mix and? mingle with other like-minded folks.
  2. Practice talking about your book. Unless you are truly blessed with the gift of gab, chances are that it?s easier to write your message than it is to tell other people about it. Regular networking gives you the opportunity to do the ubiquitous 30-second commercial, during which time you can practice pitching your book.
  3. Meet other authors and writers.?Virtually every industry has organizations devoted to it. Writing and publishing is no different. Sometimes it?s just good to get together with other writers to compare notes, share war stories, and swap tips and hints. One caveat: If you?re a freelancer and you?re networking with other freelancers, you must [learn to] embrace a prosperity perspective that says there?s plenty of work for all of you, rather than going to a place of pettiness and lack that pits you against each other as competitors.
  4. Meet other publishing industry experts. Beyond meeting other writers, it?s always good to grow your network of other publishing industry experts ? people like editors, book designers, videographers who specialize in book trailers, web designers, intellectual property attorneys, etc.
  5. Be a resource for others. One of the fastest ways to create goodwill is by giving first. Regular networking gives you the opportunity to become a resource for others, whether that means making appropriate introductions, sharing tips and tools, or simply cheering on your colleagues? successes.
  6. Learn new skills. Many networking events are tied to business development groups that offer presentations by speakers and experts of all stripes. If you?re new to publishing, or to business in general, these can be excellent opportunities to learn specific new skills like marketing, social media, accounting, public speaking, presentation skills, etc.
  7. Take a leadership role. When you find the right organization and decide to join, there?s almost a built-in opportunity to enhance your leadership skills by taking on a role within the organization. This does two things: (1) It helps you further develop your own skill set. (2) It gives you greater visibility within the organization.
  8. Open doors to speaking opportunities. As an organization leader, you will likely find yourself making greater connections with experts, speakers, and other organizational leaders. Pay attention and listen closely, and you may learn of excellent opportunities to speak and/or present to other groups.
  9. Create name recognition. One thing every author needs is a platform, which begins with local name recognition. Even if you live in a fairly small community, it will never hurt for more people to recognize and refer to you as an author. Parlay that renown into speaking opportunities, sales, and more.
  10. Sell more books. Many networking events make vendor tables/booths available to members and/or attendees. In the right setting, you can use such an opportunity to sell more books and create even greater visibility from which to grow your platform.

Next up, we?re going to dive into the basics: how to make a good first impression. You?d be amazed at how many things affect the way people think of you on your first meeting!

In the meantime, put your SBM thinking caps on and consider (new) places you might get out and make yourself visible!

Laura

Monogamy and the immune system

Friday, August 31, 2012

In the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains two closely related species of mice share a habitat and a genetic lineage, but have very different social lives. The California mouse (Peromyscus californicus) is characterized by a lifetime of monogamy; the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is sexually promiscuous.

Researchers at the University of California Berkeley recently showed how these differences in sexual behavior impact the bacteria hosted by each species as well as the diversity of the genes that control immunity. The results were published in the May 2012 edition of PLoS One.

Monogamy is a fairly rare trait in mammals, possessed by only five percent of species. Rarely do two related, but socially distinguishable, species live side-by-side. This makes these two species of mice interesting subjects for Matthew MacManes, a National Institutes of Health-sponsored post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley.

Through a series of analyses, MacManes and researchers from the Lacey Lab examined the differences between these two species on the microscopic and molecular levels. They discovered that the lifestyles of the two mice had a direct impact on the bacterial communities that reside within the female reproductive tract. Furthermore, these differences correlate with enhanced diversifying selection on genes related to immunity against bacterial diseases.

Bacteria live on every part of our bodies and have distinctive ecologies. The first step of MacManes project involved testing the bacterial communities that resided in the vaginas of both species of mice ? the most relevant area for a study about monogamous and promiscuous mating systems.

Next, MacManes performed a genetic analysis on the variety of DNA present, revealing hundreds of different types of bacteria present in each species. He found that the promiscuous deer mouse had twice the bacterial diversity as the monogamous California mouse. Since many bacteria cause sexually transmitted infections (like chlamydia or gonorrhea), he used the diversity of bacteria as a proxy for risk of disease. Results of the study were published in Naturwissenschaften in October 2011.

But this wasn't the end of the exploration.

"The obvious next question was, does the bacterial diversity in the promiscuous mice translate into something about the immune system, or how the immune system functions?" MacManes asked.

MacManes hypothesized that selective pressures caused by generation after generation of bacterial warfare had fortified the genomes of the promiscuous deer mouse against the array of bacteria it hosts.

To find out, he sequenced genes related to immune function of the two mice species and compared each species' versions of one important immunity gene, MHC-DQa. Some forms of genes (alleles) are better at recognizing different pathogens than others. If an individual has only a single common allele, it may only recognize a limited set of bacterial pathogens. In contrast, if an individual has two different alleles it may recognize a more diverse set of bacterial pathogens, and thus be more protected against infection.

Based on a comparison of the two species' genotypes he confirmed that the promiscuous mice had much more diversity in the genes related to their immune system.

"The promiscuous mice, by virtue of their sexual system, are in contact with more individuals and are exposed to a lot more bacteria," MacManes said. "They need a more robust immune system to fend off all of the bugs that they're exposed to."

The results, published in PLoS One, match findings in humans and other species with differential mating habits. They show that differences in social behavior can lead to changes in the selection pressures and gene-level evolutionary changes in a species.

Motivated by this result, MacManes began work on a project that looked to understand the genetics of a far more complex behavior?whether to stay at home with relatives, or to disperse to a new burrow.

Scientists have been sequencing and exploring the genome for more than a decade. For much of this time, studies have been limited to the most common and well-known species: humans, lab-mice, and fruit flies. But in recent years, as the cost of sequencing has dropped and the methods of exploring genomic information have improved, researchers have begun to analyze other less traditional organisms.

MacManes project was one of the first studies to use next-generation gene sequencing and high performance computers to assess the influence of behavior on genes in a non-model species.

"This is a field that people have always been interested in, but the tools hadn't existed yet for people to really understand how complex the mechanisms were," MacManes said.

Next-generation sequencing determines the order of the nucleotide bases in a molecule of DNA by breaking the double helix into short fragments and rapidly analyzing thousands of chunks at a time. Once hundreds of millions of genetic snippets have been read out by a DNA sequencer, they must be assembled into a single genome, or mapped to a reference genome, and compared to other genetic sequences to be useful.

"The sequencing is something that you can do in any molecular biology lab?that's easy," MacManes said. "But when you try to do an analysis of the data, you get back something like several billion base pairs of data. How to actually analyze the data is the real issue."

As a National Science Foundation (NSF) graduate research fellow, MacManes learned that researchers could access NSF supercomputers through the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) to analyze datasets too big for their university laboratory clusters. Once he had his sequences, MacManes turned to the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin, a lead partner in XSEDE and home to the Ranger supercomputer.

"When we first started using Ranger, it was a breakthrough moment for us," he said. "We had the data set, but we didn't have any way to do anything with it. Ranger was really our first real chance at analyzing this data. "

The alignment and analysis that MacManes accomplished on Ranger in a few weeks would have taken years with his local resources. It organized the data so MacManes could find insights about the relationship between genes and behavior.

"The ability to isolate and compare genetic differences related to social behavior using advanced computing is a fascinating application of emerging technologies," said Jennifer Verodolin, a researcher specializing in social rodents at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina. "We often see individual and population-level social and mating differences within the same species. While ecological factors are linked to this variation, these sophisticated new tools will now allow us to see the genetic signature of how natural selection has shaped behavior."

Mating systems, and social systems more broadly, are important to basic evolutionary biology, MacManes asserted. "The things an animal does, the way it behaves, and who it interacts with, are important to natural selection. These factors can cause immunogenes to evolve at a much faster rate, or slower in the case of monogamous mice. That connection is important and probably under-recognized."

Monogamy and promiscuity are only one of a variety of social behaviors that are thought to influence gene expression. MacManes' current research involves analyzing gene expression in the hippocampus brain region of tuco tucos (a sort of South American gopher) who live together in social groups and others who live independently. He is hoping to find what differentiates the social animals from the loners and what impact this change in their behavior has on their genetic profile.

"Now that we have these new sequencing technologies, people are going to be really interested in looking at the mechanisms that underlie these behaviors," MacManes said. "How might genes control what we do, and how we behave? We're going to see an explosion in these studies where people start to understand the very basic genetic mechanism for all sorts of behaviors that we know are out there."

Knight accepts Nasdaq's $62-million Facebook payback plan

Thu Aug 30, 2012 12:07pm EDT

(Reuters) - After initially criticizing Nasdaq OMX Group for its response to Facebook's botched initial public offering, trading firm Knight Capital Group Inc said it accepted the exchange's latest plan to pay back brokers a portion of their losses.

Knight's support comes after Nasdaq increased the payback fund to $62 million in cash from an earlier $40 million made up mostly of trading rebates, the market-making firm said in a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, dated August 29.

Knight, which facilitates trades for other firms, had called Nasdaq's earlier plan "inadequate," and said it was considering legal action over the May 18 IPO.

"Although we would have preferred that the accommodation pool cover all losses sustained by Nasdaq members, we do support Nasdaq's proposal to increase the accommodation pool from $40 million to $62 million," Knight said in the letter obtained by Reuters.

Knight and other retail market-making firms and brokers together lost more than $500 million in the IPO.

Some firms, like UBS AG, which disclosed it lost more than $350 million, and Citigroup's Automated Trading Desk, which is said to have lost up to $35 million, have rejected the plan, saying Nasdaq should be responsible for all of the losses, because it acted in a for-profit manner in the IPO.

Liabilities at U.S. exchanges, which have some regulatory duties, are capped in most instances. Nasdaq's cap is $3 million a month.

Knight said it lost more than $35 million in the IPO, but it urged the SEC to leave the discussion of liability limitations and regulatory immunity to another day.

Citadel Securities, which is said to have lost $20 million, has also voiced support for the plan.

Still, Knight urged the SEC to reject a portion of Nasdaq's plan, which would require firms that sign on to waive their right to sue the exchange, a requirement Knight called "misplaced."

"Setting forth those types of requirements in the context of a rule filing inappropriately mixes commercial issues with regulatory requirements," Knight said in the three-page letter also addressed to SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro.

It said if the SEC disagrees and determines that some form of release is appropriate, it should only be sought after Nasdaq members are notified of the amount Nasdaq is willing to pay under the terms of the accommodation plan.

Fall TV lineup presents positive portrayals of same-sex relationships ...

When the Fall 2012 television season starts up again in a few weeks, viewers will be treated to more prominent same-sex relationships than we've seen in most recent TV seasons. In addition to a number of returning strongholds on shows like Glee, Modern Family, and Grey's Anatomy, this season will introduce two new series with leading characters in same-sex relationships. [UPDATE BELOW: Read GLAAD's new?Network Responsibility Index report.]

The new shows -?The New Normal?and?Partners?- will appear on NBC and CBS, respectively. Ryan Murphy's new series The New Normal tells the story of a male couple who adopts a child from a surrogate mother, while Partners, from the duo who created Will & Grace, focuses on a friendship between a straight, newly engaged man and his gay business partner.

Partners has attracted very little controversy this summer, but The New Normal was at the center of a dust-up this week when KSL-TV, a Utah-based NBC affiliate,?announced that it would not be airing the show, saying, "For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time." The series is about a loving and committed same-sex couple working to adopt a child and begin a family.?

Ellen Barkin, one of the stars of the show,?responded to the controversy at a press conference?earlier today. She said:

Yes, it is [an affiliate's] right to ban something, but I do think it's a form of censorship. I don't understand why a show that I happen to love, like Law and Order: SVU, is in family viewing time. Why that show, that I hope nobody is allowing a 10-year-old to watch, is acceptable but a show about a very loving, committed same sex couple wanting to raise a child, why that is explicit and offensive and rape, murder, child slavery in very graphic detail is not.

KSL-TV's condemnation of the series as "inappropriate" implies that it is unnatural or wrong for two men in a committed same-sex relationship to raise a child together. This idea that gay and lesbian people are "inappropriate" parents has been disproven by?30 years of scientific research?that finds that the children of gay and lesbian couples grow up to be just as successful as the children of different-sex couples. There are two million children being raised by one million gay parents in the United States, and the only thing that would make their lives smoother would be if their parents did not have to face legal discrimination, including being denied the freedom to marry.

KSL-TV's decision to ban The New Normal promotes an unfounded, unnecessary fear of families headed by same-sex couples. You can?sign a petition at Change.org?asking KSL-TV to reverse its decision?HERE.?

The characters on The New Normal and Partners join a host of same-sex couples - Grey's Anatomy's Callie and Arizona, who married last season; Glee's Santana-Brittany and Kurt-Blaine romances; and Modern Family's Mitchell and Cameron, who nearly adopted a second child in May's season finale - in the fall lineup. These relationships, while fictional, provide important representations of the love and commitment that everyday same-sex couples share. Millions of viewers - including viewers who may not yet support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples - are watching these TV shows and learning that same-sex couples often want the same thing that different-sex couples want: the freedom to marry the person they love.?

We understand that the portrayal of same-sex couples on television is far from perfect - very few gay or lesbian characters are people of color, for example - but every time a network television series features a same-sex couple discussing their love, affection, and dedication to each other, it's a step forward in showing that these kinds of relationships don't hurt communities - they strengthen and enrich them.?

Check out the most recent?"Where We Are On TV" Report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) HERE?to learn more about the importance of positive media representation of gay and lesbian people and relationships.?

UPDATE: GLAAD's latest Network Responsibility Index was published today, August 30.?Read the entire report here (PDF).?

Romney makes Mormonism part of his big night

His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

After years of avoiding direct mention of his religion, Mitt Romney will open up about his Mormon faith as he accepts the Republican nomination for president.

The former Massachusetts governor is the first Mormon presidential candidate on a major party ticket. It's unclear just how much detail he will provide on Thursday night, the pinnacle of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. He has spoken broadly in the past about the importance of prayer and belief in God, but has not discussed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

However, the roster of speakers promises at least a glimpse into his nearly 14 years of service as a lay Mormon pastor around Boston. The invocation will be given by Ken Hutchins, a retired Northborough, Mass., police chief, who was also a Mormon leader in the state, and Grant Bennett, who served as a church counselor to Romney, is scheduled to offer remarks.

"I think this is a speech where he's going to talk a lot about what's informed his values, what's informed his outlook. Of course his faith is an important part of that," Romney aide Kevin Madden said in Tampa this week. "It's an important part of who he is as a husband and a father. And so I think you can expect some of that."

Starting in the 1980s, Romney was a bishop in the Boston suburb of Belmont, a job akin to the pastor of a congregation. He then served as a stake president, the top Mormon authority in his region, which meant he presided over several congregations in a district similar to a diocese.

He counseled Latter-day Saints on their most personal concerns, regarding marriage, parenting, finances and faith. He worked with immigrant converts from Haiti, Cambodia and other countries. Bennett has in the past described how Romney built relationships with other religious groups around his Belmont, Mass., hometown, after a suspicious fire in 1984 destroyed a new Mormon meeting house there.

Other convention speakers have already laid a foundation for this new faith emphasis. In his acceptance speech Wednesday night, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, a Roman Catholic, said "our different faiths come together in the same moral creed." Ann Romney, in a speech meant to show a more personal side of her husband, describing the early challenges they faced as a couple, including religious differences. "I was Episcopalian. He was a Mormon," she said. The reference was striking given that the Romneys almost never use the word Mormon on the campaign trail.

Republican evangelicals have been playing down conflict with Latter-day Saints. Most prominently, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, speaking from the podium Wednesday night, said, "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church, than I do about where he takes this country." Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor before he entered politics, had publicly questioned Mormon beliefs when he was competing against Romney in the 2008 presidential primary. Most Christians don't consider Latter-day Saints part of traditional Christianity, although Mormons do.

Romney has struggled to navigate as a religious minority seeking the nation's highest office.

Since Mormons generally live in concentrated communities in the Mountain West and California, few Americans have met a Latter-day Saint. Most Mormons said they were stunned by the open expression of prejudice against their church during Romney's first bid for the White House.

In his 2008 campaign, Romney openly courted evangelicals, who make up about a quarter of the electorate and are a critical part of the Republican base. He stressed the beliefs he shared with Christian conservatives about Christ and the Bible, and he promised he would not be influenced on policy by the leaders of the LDS church. This year, he has done little public outreach with Protestant conservatives and, until now, has largely separated his Mormonism from his campaign.

"He's trying to find the right register, and those around him who advise him are trying to find the right register. Now, it seems, the push is to make him look human, that means emphasizing the admittedly wonderful things he has done in the church to help people," said Laurie Maffly-Kipp, a religion scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who writes frequently about the LDS church. "The trick is to do that without bringing up the parts of Mormonism that might sound odd to others."

A Gallup poll in June found that voter bias against Mormons has barely budged for decades. In the survey, 18 percent of Americans said they would not vote for a well-qualified presidential candidate who happens to be a Mormon, compared to 17% who said so in 1967, when Romney's father George had been seeking the Republican nomination.

However, the campaign clearly felt more confident discussing the LDS Church since Romney sealed the nomination.

Polls indicate that Republican voters are willing to set aside their concerns about the LDS church to oust President Barack Obama. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that a majority of people who know that Romney is Mormon are comfortable with his religion or don't consider it a concern. In the days leading up to the convention, Romney told interviewers he prays daily and discussed the doubts he experienced about his religion when he, like most young Mormon men, fulfilled his church duty to serve as a missionary. Romney served in overwhelmingly Catholic France during the 1960s, and faced hostility as an American and a Mormon.

"I don't think underlying attitudes have changed," said John Green, director of the University of Akron's Bliss Institute for Applied Politics. "I don't think evangelicals are any less skeptical about Mormons, but an election is a choice and Republicans have something to work with here because of the unpopularity of Obama among this group of evangelicals."

Beijing tops most philanthropic cities ranking | China Media

Beijing was listed No 1 in a ranking of the most philanthropic Chinese mainland cities unveiled on Monday.

The capital city ranked first among 321 cities on the Chinese mainland with a score of 94 out of a possible 100 points, according to a report based on the China City Philanthropy Indexes 2012.

Shanghai ranked second, while Shenzhen tied with Wuxi in East China?s Jiangsu province for third place.

The indexes, designed by the China Charity and Donation Information Center, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, measured cities? philanthropic performances in six areas. They are charitable donations, accounting for 20 points; charitable organizations, 20 points; charitable projects, 16 points; voluntary service, 20 points; government support, 12 points; and the culture of philanthropy, 12 points.

The Beijing government was the most supportive of philanthropy among all surveyed cities, as it scored 11.5 points while the average for other cities polled was 5.76 points. Government support for philanthropy was measured in several ways, including financial support, the implementation of preferential tax policies for donors and management of charitable activities.

Liu Youping, deputy director of the center, said the Beijing government has been actively supporting grassroots organizations, which contributed to its high score in the ranking.

Since 2010, Beijing has allocated specific funds from the government?s annual budget to subsidize NGOs to provide public services, with an investment of 50 million yuan ($7.86 million) this year, Beijing News reported.

?The report reflects the philanthropic performance of about half of all Chinese cities,? Liu said. ?It shows that the governments in general become more supportive toward philanthropic causes and NGOs including charitable organizations.?

?We have witnessed that many cities in Guangdong province have simplified the registration procedure for NGOs, and Shanghai has NGO incubators that provide training for professionals in this field,? he said.

The ranking also revealed that philanthropy is thriving more in eastern Chinese cities than central and western ones.

The report said the average score for cities in eastern China is about 57 points, around 10 points higher than cities in the central and western parts of China.

Deng Guosheng, a professor specializing in philanthropic studies at the School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University, said cities in eastern China are usually more economically developed, and the culture of philanthropy reached these regions much earlier than their central and western counterparts.

He explained that the large number of overseas Chinese from eastern coastal areas who immigrated to Western countries and then came back to their hometowns also brought back the culture of charitable giving.

Deng said he hopes the ranking will help the public and the government understand more about the development and changes in philanthropy.

He also expressed his concern over irrational competition.

?I am worried that some city may use government power to force companies or citizens to donate in order to improve their ranking,? he said.

10 Proven Ways to Go Viral | Seymour Products

Although there is a debate as to when the term viral marketing really originated, it did rise in popularity in the mid to late 90?s. Viral marketing works just like a virus. One person reads a marketing message, gets infected by it and passes it on to another person. The better the message, the more it spreads. And the term viral marketing is born!

There are many methods and techniques for spreading your viral marketing message. The explosion of social media marketing has brought viral marketing to new heights. But along with social media there are also more traditional ways to spread your marketing virus. Below are ten totally doable ways to launch and propel your viral marketing campaign.

1. Free eBook ? eBooks have been a very popular and effective means of viral marketing for quite some time. Compile a free PDF ebook using articles you have written, useful information, resources, etc., and start spreading that virus. Offer the ebook to your visitors for free. Write a message inside encouraging them to give the ebook to their visitors and so on and so on. Submit the ebook to free ebook sites and directories. Add a link to the ebook in your email sigtag. The better the content of the ebook the more the ?virus? will spread.

If you feel that you cannot write your own ebook, there are a lot of PLR and rebrandable ebooks you could use to achieve the same results.

2. Newsletters ? If you publish a newsletter, you can use that to increase your viral marketing. Make it easy for people to share it with others. Encourage your subscribers to forward a copy to their friends so they can subscribe. Offer a free gift to the subscribers who can get the most people to subscribe.

3. Articles ? Writing and submitting articles can be one of the most powerful viral marketing techniques. This will be most likely happen only if your article is well-written and contains helpful, useful information. Do not try to pass off a long sales pitch as an article. Submit your article to quality sites that allow visitors to reprint the article with your resource box. Add a Send to a Friend link in your resource box. When possible, thank the person for reprinting your article and let them know of any other articles you might have. Compile a list of newsletter publishers who accept article submissions. There are countless ways to spread your quality articles and infect many people.

4. Social Media ? Social media has the capabilities of expanding your viral marketing to new heights. Try to regularly participate in at least the top three social sites which are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. A newcomer that is rising in popularity very fast is Pinterest so I would recommend starting with that one as well. When used effectively, these social media sites allow you to spread your virus in ways that were not before possible.

5. Blogging ? Blogging is a form of social media marketing and can do wonders for your viral marketing. A quality blog will pull in many readers on a regular basis. Make it easy for your readers to interact with comments and opinions. Update your content consistently and always respond to reader comments for more success.

6. Tell-A-Friend ? A free tell-a-friend script is a handy thing to have on your site or blog. It allows people to send your webpage to anyone they think would be interested thus launching your viral marketing. The easier it is for people to share your message the more your virus will spread.

7. Social Media Share Buttons ? These highly effective buttons allow your visitors to easily share your blog, site or information with all their social media followers and friends. You can find many options for free that have these buttons for many of the social media sites. The first site to come up for some of these options is ShareThis.

8. Videos ? Over two million people watch YouTube videos each day so getting your marketing video visible to this massive audience will pump up your viral marketing. You can also post video clips on your site with a well-spoken marketing message or demonstration. Make it easy for people to pass on your video to their friends and followers.

9. Word-of-Mouth ? Word of mouth is one of the oldest forms of viral marketing. It?s been around long before the internet was ever dreamed of. It is also one of the most effective because people are passing on your message to people they know and their opinion is probably taken with more approval and consideration. It can also be more difficult because it requires people to take a more involved action than clicking a button. Make your customers feel happy and satisfied and they will spread the word (or virus).

10. Email ? Email is one of the more traditional online viral marketing methods. How many times have you received emails that have been forwarded to you by people you don?t even know? That is the power of viral. Don?t be afraid to ask people to forward your emails to everyone they know. Sending out emails of value, quality and usefulness just might cause a widespread infection!

The power of viral marketing is unlimited but your marketing ?virus? needs to be unique, useful, entertaining and powerful. People will not spread something that is not worth spreading. Study marketing tactics of other companies but try to develop your own unique idea or twist of an old idea, that no one else has used before. Develop a new virus for which there is no cure!

Liverpool, Manchester City draw

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:23 p.m. ET Aug. 26, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester City twice came from behind to draw 2-2 against Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday with Carlos Tevez scoring a late equalizer.

Martin Skrtel headed Liverpool into a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Yaya Toure leveled for City on 63.

Luis Suarez restored Liverpool's lead three minutes later from a free kick but Skrtel then underhit a back pass toward Reina that Carlos Tevez latched on to, rounding the goalkeeper and slotting into an empty net.

At the Britannia Stadium, Stoke and Arsenal played out a scoreless draw where United States international Geoff Cameron made his debut for Stoke.

----

MADRID - Lionel Messi scored two late goals Sunday as Barcelona came from behind to win 2-1 at Osasuna in the Spanish league.

The hosts looked took the lead after Joseba Llorente's acrobatic 17th-minute goal and it wasn't until the 76th that Messi leveled, guiding Alexis Sanchez's short pass beyond goalkeeper Andres Fernandez.

Osasuna went down to 10 men when Francisco Punal was red carded for arguing the goal was offside.

Messi then latched on to Jordi Alba's cross in the 80th for the winner.

----

BERLIN - Hannover drew 2-2 against Schalke thanks to a late Adrian Nikci three minutes into his Bundesliga debut.

Brazilian defender Felipe opened the scoring in the 43rd minute for Hannover, before last season's leading scorer, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, drew the visitors level with a great individual effort in the 52nd.

Lewis Holtby put Schalke ahead 12 minutes later, only for Nikci - who had just replaced the injured Felipe - to score with his first touch of the ball with 10 minutes remaining.

On Friday, defending champion Borussia Dortmund opened the season with a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, while Bayern Munich won 3-0 at promoted Greuther Fuerth the next day.

----

MILAN - Newly promoted Sampdoria stunned AC Milan 1-0 in its opening Serie A match on Andrea Costa's headed goal in the 60th minute.

Kevin-Prince Boateng almost rescued a point for Milan in stoppage time but his effort crashed off the right post.

Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini could also have scored in a frantic finale but his effort was cleared off the line by Sampdoria defender Daniele Gastaldello.

It was Milan's first game without star strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano as well as key defender Thiago Silva, who were all sold during the offseason.

----

PARIS - Defending champion Montpellier is still winless in the French league this season after Andre-Pierre Gignac's second-half goal gave Marseille a 1-0 win.

Saint-Etienne picked up its first points of the season by beating Brest 4-0. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice, either side of goals from Romain Hamouma and Josuha Guilavogui.

----

AMSTERDAM - FC Twente moved top of the Dutch league after beating NEC Nijmegen 3-1 for its third straight win of the season.

The victory left Steve McClaren's Twente as the only team in the Dutch top flight with a perfect record after three rounds.

United States striker Jozy Altidore hit the post but could not add to his league-leading tally of four goals in his first two matches as SC Heerenveen held his AZ Alkmaar side to a scoreless draw.

In other matches Sunday, Jonathan Reis scored both goals as Vitesse Arnhem beat Willem II Tilburg 2-0, Feyenoord won 2-1 at Heracles Almelo and PSV beat FC Groningen 3-1.

On Saturday, defending champion Ajax recorded its second big win of the season, beating NAC Breda 5-0 in Amsterdam.

----

GLASGOW - Rangers failed to clinch its first away win in the fourth tier of Scottish football after drawing at Berwick 1-1.

Rangers took the lead just before half time through Andy Little but Fraser McLaren leveled for Berwick in the 62nd minute at Shielfield Park with a tightly angled shot inside the penalty area.

Rangers, which was plunged into liquidation and forced into Division Three, has five points from three games including two away draws.

On Saturday, Celtic won at Inverness 4-2 in the Scottish Premier League, with Tony Watt scoring twice for the defending champion.

Isaac threatens to overshadow U.S. Republican convention

TAMPA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac menaced the U.S. presidential election campaign on Sunday, forcing Republicans to make changes to their national convention in Tampa, Florida, where party officials scrambled to make sure candidate Mitt Romney's message to voters does not get blown off course.

The storm was now forecast to hit land midweek, possibly even blasting into New Orleans at hurricane strength on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina - which might hurt the party's effort to get out its message more than if it had hit Tampa Bay directly as originally predicted.

Expecting earlier that Tampa would be in Issac's sights, convention organizers had canceled Monday's opening events and tried to squeeze as many speakers and activities into three days as had been planned for four.

Republicans this week are to formally nominate Romney and vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan as their candidates to face President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the November 6 election.

"It's a concern ... competing with a major weather event," Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said on ABC's "This Week." Still he said he expected independent voters particularly will tune in to hear Romney and Ryan speak. "I think we'll still get a fair amount of attention, and the message will be good."

"We're going to tell the Mitt Romney story, we're still going to prosecute the president on what he promised, what he delivered, and why we think we need to save this country and put Mitt Romney in the White House," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said on CNN.

The Republican convention, just like the Democrats' similar gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, early next month, is typically a celebratory event bringing together thousands of party activists from across the United States for a week of speeches, partying and strategizing.

But the Republicans, now faced with a potential natural disaster along the same Gulf Coast that saw 1,800 people killed and billions of dollars in damage from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, will have to temper any celebrations with concern for those affected by Isaac.

The importance of the convention for Romney cannot be overstated. Running either even with Obama or slightly behind him, Romney needs a bounce in the polls from the convention.

His challenge is to convince Americans that he is a viable alternative to the incumbent Democrat, and his big week, culminating with a speech on Thursday, needs as few distractions as possible. Media focused on howling winds and storm surges in another part of the country will make his task more difficult.

He enters convention week having made a self-inflicted error by telling a crowd in Michigan "no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," a joke that rekindled a storyline from conservatives over whether Obama was actually born in the United States.

Romney tried to get the focus on what he considers the paramount issue in the campaign, the weak U.S. economy, telling Fox News he and Ryan would offer "big and bold answers."

"America needs that kind of help at a time when so many people are out of work or underemployed or having a hard time making ends meet," he said in remarks broadcast on Sunday.

Fueled by warm Gulf waters, Isaac is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds and landfall was likely to come midweek somewhere between Florida and Louisiana, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

The storm expected to be at or near hurricane force when it swept across the Florida Keys by Sunday evening, the NHC said. A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour. At least six people were killed when it moved across Haiti.

SAFETY FIRST

Party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to ensure the safety of everyone attending the convention. Although it may move ashore to the west, heavy winds and rain can stretch hundreds of miles out from the storm's center.

A Lynyrd Skynyrd concert planned for Sunday night was canceled due to the likely severe weather, although performances by Trace Adkins, Kid Rock and Journey were moving ahead as scheduled.

The Republican convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. Over the last few days, local authorities have said they could handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

The last Republican convention, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 was also delayed a day due to a storm. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to nominate Senator John McCain as the Republican nominee.

The party, still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rushed to delay the meeting out of respect for Gustav's victims.

Convention president Bill Harris said the party was ready operationally for events in Tampa to begin but they were acting out of an "abundance of caution" because of the uncertainty of the weather.

"I want to make sure everyone who attends the convention is safe and everyone who lives in Florida is not unnecessarily injured by any activities taking place when a storm threatens," Harris said.

Biden, who had planned to visit Florida during the convention but who had already canceled his Tampa event because of the storm has decided to also cancel his other events in Orlando and St. Augustine.

Republicans Delay Convention Start to Tuesday Due to Weather Concerns

Republican officials are delaying the start of their convention until at least Tuesday as Tropical Storm Isaac bears down on the Tampa Bay region, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Saturday in a memo.

Priebus said GOP officials will determine how to re-arrange the remaining three days of the Republican National Convention schedule as early as Sunday. Officially, the convention will convene on Monday, and then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon.

?Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area,? Priebus said. ?RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.?

Saturday?s announcement caps nearly a week of speculation that Isaac, which is expected to grow into a hurricane by the time it hits the area, could delay or even force the outright cancellation of the convention or parts of it. Concern had abated in the past day or two, but Republican officials still determined holding the gathering Monday could endanger the participants.

?Our chief priority is the safety of the residents of Florida, of those visiting the Convention, and all those in Gulf Coast states who may be impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac,? said Bill Harris, the CEO of the RNC.

Vice President Joe Biden's plans also were affected by the weather. A day after canceling his Democratic counter-messaging visit to Tampa on Monday, the Obama-Biden campaign said the vice president would also postpone events planned for Tuesday in Orlando and St. Augustine. The change was made "to ensure that all law enforcement and emergency management resources across the state can continue their focus on ensuring the safety of those who might be impacted by the storm," the campaign said.

Democrats are holding a three-day convention in Charlotte Sept. 4-6. Republicans had planned on a four-day convention starting Monday and culminating Thursday with Mitt Romney accepting the GOP presidential nomination.

Even before Isaac, Monday was giving the party trouble. Television networks said they would not run coverage on Monday night, though Ann Romney was scheduled to speak that night. On Friday. Romney said his wife's speech had been moved to Tuesday night.

This is not the first time Monday activities at a Republican convention have been affected by severe weather. Four years ago, Hurricane Gustav prompted Republican officials to cancel most of the first day's program in St. Paul.
